Unforeseen Consequences
Unforeseen Consequences is the third chapter of Half-Life. The player controls Gordon Freeman as he awakens as one of the few survivors of the Resonance Cascade started in Anomalous Materials. Freeman travels through the previously safe, now unstable and alien infested lab areas of the previous chapter, and into the Cargo and Sewerage areas adjacent to the Anomalous Materials lab on a quest to reach the surface and find help. In the course of this Journey, he has his first hostile encounters with bizarre Xenian Fauna including the Headcrab, Headcrab Zombie, Houndeye, Bullsquid and Barnacle as well as fighting the sentient Vortigaunts glimpsed in the teleportation events at the end of the previous chapter.
Despite being three entire chapters into the game, Valve chose Unforeseen Consequences as the moment to introduce combat to the player - something all but unheard of in 1998, but copied and refined quite commonly since. In this chapter, the player first gains the symbolic Crowbar and the Glock Sidearm. Unforeseen Consequences is also the point at which Valve introduced a darkly-comic edge into the game's scripted sequences, including one famous sequences where a scientist squashes a headcrab with a filing cabinet, only to be immediately attacked and killed from behind by another.
Though never heard in Half-Life, Eli Vance during Half-Life 2 Episode Two claims that the G-Man whispered the words 'Unforeseen Consequences' to him shortly before the disastrous experiment that the first game depicts. This phrase is also the message that the G-Man choses to convey to Eli, via Alyx Vance during Episode Two, and Eli takes it as a warning of an impending second disaster.
Trivia
- Unforeseen Consequences consists of the seven maps c1a0e, c1a1, c1a1a, c1a1b, c1a1c, c1a1d and c1a1f.
- It is not known whether the missing c1a1e is a deleted map, or whether c1a1f was simply assigned an out of sequence code.
- In the Half-Life 2 chapter Black Mesa East, Eli claims to be the scientist who dispatched Gordon to the surface during Unforeseen Consequences.
