Office Complex is the fourth chapter of Half-Life. During this chapter, the player (as Gordon Freeman) explores the Sector D Office Complex en route to the Surface. Meeting a number of survivors, the player is told that soldiers are on their way to rescue the science team, but the indiscriminate firing of the complex's security system foreshadows the conflict to come.
Criticism
The mundane Office environment further reinforces the (critically popular and somewhat groundbreaking) real world setting of the Black Mesa Facility and shows how the 'Unforeseen Consequences' of the experiment have spread beyond the Anomalous Materials Laboratory. The area introduces the shotgun into the player's arsenal, increases the number of enemy encounters and complicates the distinction between enemy and ally with the introduction of powerful ceiling-mounted turrets that quickly clear rooms of both hostile and friendly entities. Office Complex is the first chapter to contain a significant amount of Air-Duct exploration, a Half-Life staple considered iconic yet unrewarding in criticism of the game.
Trivia
Office Complex consists of the five maps; c1a2, c1a2a, c1a2b, c1a2c and c1a2d. Progression through these maps is mostly linear, but secret routes can be found that allow access to small weapons caches in earlier maps.
The flooded Office in C1a2 carries a plaque saying 'Dr Newell Scheduled Chaos Theory R&D'. This is clearly a reference to Gabe Newell and the troubled development schedule of Half-Life.
