Odessa Cubbage

Odessa Cubbage, a minor leader in the Resistance

Odessa Cubbage is a minor character seen in Half-Life 2. He is a man with an English accent and wears a blue jacket with what appear to be military ribbon bars on the left chest and "SECURITY" on the back. He serves as the commander of a small group of rebels against the Combine.

Gordon Freeman encounters Odessa Cubbage during the Highway 17 chapter of Half-Life 2. He apparently has set up his base of operations, of which he calls New Little Odesa, in the basement of an abandoned house, and gives Freeman the RPG, with which he shoots down an approaching Gunship. Cubbage then sends Freeman on his way, having his subordinates open a large gate across the road. Prior to this meeting, Cubbage can be seen with the G-Man in the upper floor of this building. Cubbage is the only named character to have ever been seen with the G-Man. Despite this unique and potentially important appearance, nothing more has been seen of Odessa Cubbage since, and there is no information on his possible return.

Trivia

  • It is learned in Episode One from in-game dialogue that word has gotten out that Cubbage has been given credit for destroying the Gunship, rather than Freeman.
  • When a rebel asks if her father is Dr. Kleiner, Alyx Vance sarcastically remarks that her father is actually Odessa Cubbage.
  • Cubbage's facial texture was originally intended for a character named Odell (or Owen) aboard the Borealis Ice Breaker ship.
  • As Odell is described in certain pre-E3 2003 previews, it is likely that the character of Odessa Cubbage did not exist until the very last year of Half-Life's development, possibly making him the very last addition to Half-Life 2's cast.
  • Cubbage's mustache, described as looking fake by the strategy guide is indeed an artificial addition to the original texture: neither Odell nor the Martial Arts Teaching source of the face sport a moustache. Cubbage's over the top, theatrical facade may be a subtle reference to the revisionism the character has undergone.
