Judith Mossman

I'm sorry Wallace, but you're all out of time.

Doctor Judith Mossman is an enthusiastic theoretical physicist who has been known to sometimes ramble on about her research, sounding like, as she puts it herself, a “post-doc”. She is currently a member of the Combine-resistance movement. She was considered for the position of research associate in the Anomalous Materials laboratory in the Black Mesa Research Facility. This post was eventually given to Gordon Freeman, due to his experience in the University of Innsbruck.

Judith has passion for her work, but sometimes allows this to cloud her judgment, and thus what brought her into Doctor Breen's inner circle; using her to penetrate the resistance team Breen preyed on her relationship with Eli Vance and somehow convinced her that their cause was doomed, and that the only chance for survival is for them to submit to the Combine.

The Resistance

Dr. Mossman is a member of the resistance movement and has helped to develop their teleportation technology, but, unlike the Black Mesa scientists, she in not one of the leading members of the resistance.

Two Betrayals

Although Dr. Mossman had dedicated herself to working with the resistance, her love for her work and scientific curiosity ultimately lulled her to Wallace Breen's ultimate intentions. She was convinced that the only way to guarantee the survival of the human race, and that of her lover Eli Vance, was to aid the Combine in their quest for the local teleportation technology. She helped them copy the resistance’s advances and construct their own local-teleport.

Following the Black Mesa East attack she was deported to the processing plant Nova Prospekt, where they set her to work on the now finalized local-teleporter: a technology the Combine had tried desperately to control. She was found by Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance, and they forced her to aid in their escape of the facility. Again, she deceived them, and with Eli entered the teleport with a destination of the Citadel.

After much internal struggle, and after seeing Dr. Breen deal so ruthlessly with his “oldest friend”, Eli Vance, she decided that she had misplaced her allegiances and turned on Breen. She threatened him with an EMP tool, which had been confiscated from Alyx and freed the others from their ‘pods’.

Following this intervention she helped Eli to his feet after Breen attacked with the Gravity Gun, made amends with Alyx and told her to stop Breen before he reached the portal. As Alyx and Gordon pursued the Administrator Judith and Eli made for his personal escape pods and before the Dark Fusion Reactor erupted fled the Citadel and out to a Vortigaunt camp in the Outland.

The Project

Following their escape from the Citadel, Dr. Mossman again said goodbye to Eli and, in order to prove herself once more, sets off in search of something known only as 'The Project'. Little is known of what happens after this point; however, her open-transmission is picked up by the Combine Network and Alyx Vance manages to catch it and store it on her data packet. According the patchy transmission, Judith is somewhere in the arctic, searching for something that she hopes won't be compromised, should it be found by the Combine. The building is attacked, and the transmission is cut short.

Relationships

As well as working with him, Dr. Mossman has a close, and possibly romantic, relationship with Dr. Eli Vance. She pleads with Dr. Breen for Eli’s life and when Breen attempts to have him sent to the far-side of a Combine portal, she turns on Breen and frees Eli.

Conversely, Dr. Mossman’s relationship with Eli’s daughter, Alyx, was originally strained and full of animosity, especially from Alyx. Alyx disliked because of her interest in Eli. Possibly, Alyx saw her as a threat to their relationship as father and daughter, or perhaps she simply didn’t like the idea of another woman being close to her father. Dr. Mossman also dislikes Alyx's playful approach to scientific matters and takes it on herself to remind Alyx of seriousness of the things she is dealing with, e.g., reminding her that “the Zero-Point Energy Field Manipulator is not a toy”. As of the destruction of the Citadel, the two have made peace and have accepted each other as both being close to Eli.

Although Dr. Mossman bears no grudges against Gordon Freeman, she does wish that she had received the position in Black Mesa instead of him and had the opportunity to work with Eli and Dr. Kleiner “when they were at the top of their field”. According to Alyx, she “[drones] on about how it should been her in the Black Mesa test-chamber that day”.
