Mecha Breen

Mecha Breen is a tongue-in-cheek enemy concept popular on the halflife2.net forums. It is commonly introduced in threads speculating on Doctor Breen's fate after the Citadel explosion and is often a sarcastic alternative to more feasible but equally optimistic Breen resurrection theories.

The basic concept is rarely expanded upon: essentially, Doctor Breen returns as a last minute, mechanically augmented and often, colossally tall boss character. The concept is particularly popular given the subtlety of the original Doctor Breen character, and it plays with Action Film / Game conventions that serious games like Half-Life have generally avoided in recent years. Nevertheless, one early Half-Life 2 story concept had a hypocritical Breen mechanised from the neck-down, albeit not as a war-machine.

A direct ancestor to Mecha Breen is Mecha Hitler, a boss character in the third chapter of iD Software's Iconic FPS Wolfenstein 3D: Rather than shooting himself alone in his bunker, Wolfenstein 3D has Adolf Hitler don a large armored suit with Chain-Gun arm attachments to fight the player. iD arguably repeated the Mecha-x concept in Doom III, by having Sargent Kelly transformed into a Hellish Tank-Man called the Sabaoth.
