A standard issue Combine hand grenade, the M83 is cannister shaped with a red LED mounted next to the pin. It is filled with explosives to the brim and fitted with a five second detonator. When thrown, the LED is activated along with a sound signal, which allows the Overwatch to avoid their own grenades in combat.
The grenade relies entirely on the power of the explosion to kill, generating little to no shrapnel when exploding. This makes it especially effective in confined spaces and when "flushing" enemies out of buildings and rooms.
Use
Using grenades is fairly straightforward; pop the top and let fly. Like other physically modeled projectiles in Half-Life 2, grenades take into account weight and mass, and physics will affect the grenade. In order to get a perfect throw, calculate the arc of your grenade before throwing it. The higher the arc, the further the grenade goes.
For close or medium range throws, the secondary fire button will perform an underhand toss of the grenade. Lobbing a grenade in this way will not make the grenade go very far, and in many cases the player will need to move away, lest they be caught in the explosion. Crouching and lobbing the grenade with the secondary fire button will roll the grenade along the ground a good distance, and can be a useful tactic for hitting enemies that are closer than overhand throw distance.
Grenades can be very sophisticated weapons depending on how you use them. One popular practice is "cooking" a grenade, a technique through which the grenade is dropped using secondary fire, picked up with the gravity gun, and thrown. This increases the range of the grenade, and can help accuracy. In addition, the timer resets each time the grenade is picked up.
