Plot

At the beginning of the game the player is are woken from stasis by a cryptic speech by the mysterious blue suited man known only as Gman. The player then appears on a train heading into a station. Approaching the two blue jump suited people on the train will reveal more small pieces of information about the storyline. The player soon exits the train, and comes face to face with a dilapidated, rubbish filled, almost depressing interior. Gordon continues through the station until he is stopped by a camera which rejects his identity.

Gordon is taken into an interrogation room, where the Metrocop reveals himself to actually be Barney Calhoun, his old friend from Black Mesa. He contacts Dr.Kleiner, another old friend, and informs him of your arrival. Gordon continues on through the streets of the city, and eventually comes to an apartment complex, where he experiences a raid. After making a quick escape across the rooftops, he is cornered and knocked out by more cops. Soon he awakes to see another new person, Alyx Vance. She introduces herself and takes you to Dr.Kleiner's lab, explaining more key story elements along the way.

After meeting Dr.Kleiner and donning his HEV Suit he and Alyx take part in what is essentially a teleporter experiment. Another pivotal character, Eli Vance, Alyx's father, is introduced just before. Alyx makes it through, but during the teleportation sequence, Kleiner's pet Headcrab, Lamarr jumps into the teleport, screwing things up badly. Gordon is teleported to various locations, including the office of Dr. Wallace Breen. After finally being deposited outside the lab, Gordon makes his way round to the front, Barney gives him his first weapon, the Crowbar he allegedly dropped back in Black Mesa.

He makes his way down into the canals, where he acquires his first gun: a USP Match. He continues through a section of train yard, and arrives at a small boxcar which is home to a Vortigaunt and refugee citizen. After getting some more info, he gets going again. Gordon advances through a huge, now useless network of canals. On the way he takes down numerous APCs and a Hunter Chopper. Finally, he arrives at Black Mesa East, a major refugee base. Where he meets Judith Mossman. Soon after arriving, the Combine, who have been following him, attack the base.

Disregarding her father's advice, Alyx tells Gordon to go through Ravenholm, a deserted mining town. He proceeds through the town, meeting some new enemies: Headcrab Zombies. He meets the deranged reverend Father Grigori, who escorts him out of ravenholm. He soon finds another Resistance base, and gains a scratch built car which takes him most of the way down the coast, meeting Combine Soldiers, Combine Gunships, and more zombies. He is eventually forced to abandon the vehicle and continue on foot to Nova Prospekt where Alyx's father has been imprisoned. On reaching the facility Gordon has gained Bugbait, or Antlion pheropods, which allow him to control antlions. He stages a massive attack on the prison, which ends with it's destruction.

One week later, Alyx and Gordon arrive at the lab. To them it seemed like a minute long teleport. But, in that time, incredibly, a week passed, the Combine War started, and everything went down the drain. Alyx stays behind to get Kleiner to safety, but Gordon advances through the city, fighting massive numbers of combine. He also meets Striders along the way. After a long fight through the city he meets with Alyx, who, rather quickly, is kidnapped, and taken to the Citadel. In one final push, Gordon makes it to the citadel, where he makes his way to the top via two prisoner pod rides.

At the top of the Citadel, Gordon has to destroy a large combine reactor in order to stop Dr. Breen's teleport. Gordon finally destroys the reactor, resulting in a massive explosion, which suddenly freezes, as the suited man comes to deliver another cryptic speech to you, before the end credits roll.
