Character Barney holding the infamous crowbar

A staple of the Half-Life universe, the crowbar is Gordon Freeman's melee weapon and his iconic symbol. This standard tool becomes a devastating weapon in Gordon's hands, allowing him to take on soldiers, hostile alien invaders, and dispatch the occassional crate with extreme prejudice.

Description

The crowbar is a round shaft with two forked ends, one end curved in a hook shape and the other flat, as a wedge. The crowbars Gordon Freeman wields have exposed metal ends, the bars themselves a deep red color.

Use

Gordon's Crowbar, as seen in Episode One

As a melee weapon, the crowbar is strictly up close and personal. Gordon can swing the bar fairly quickly in Half-Life 2 (although not as fast as in Half-Life) and a couple hits to the skull of an enemy will bring them down. If possible, it is best to wait for a break in the enemy's action, then charge in and deliver a few blows, repeating as necessary. Standing toe-to-toe with enemies in an extended fight using the crowbar is not a recommended strategy.

Trivia

Fan-made replica of Gordon Freeman's crowbar
  • There have been four, possibly five crowbars in the Half-Life series. The first is Gordon's original crowbar, picked up just outside the test chamber in Black Mesa. During the events of Half-Life, Gordon's weapons are confiscated, but he manages to retrieve a crowbar; it is unknown whether this is the original crowbar or not.

The crowbar in Half-Life 2 was Gordon's initial crowbar, a holdover from Black Mesa, claiming that Freeman "Dropped it" in that area, which is likely as he saw Dr. Freeman being tugged away by Marines, and that Barney found it in a possible trail of weapons. This crowbar was destroyed by the Citadel's Weapon Confiscation Field, along with every other weapon he possessed except the Gravity Gun.

Another crowbar was also given to Gordon by Barney in Episode One, to which Barney remarks that Gordon should take care not to lose this one, as he is running out of crowbars.

Due to the Citadel's destruction de-railing the train Gordan and Alyx use to escape City 17, it is unknown what happens to this crowbar. Gordan finds another jamming the cogs of a lift at the beginning of Episode Two, upon releasing it from the cogs the lift falls into the underground mines that lead to the Antlion tunnels. He retains this crowbar until the end of Episode Two.
