Bullsquid

The bullsquid is a large, bipedal lizard-like species, resident to Xen. It is an extremely territorial and aggressive predator, one of the most dangerous species to arrive on Earth after the Black Mesa Incident.

Anatomy

The bullsquid is a sturdily built bipedal creature. It is roughly diamond-shaped when viewed from above, with its wide body and shoulders tapering down to its narrow mouth and pointed tail. This massive tail provides balance for the creature and serves as a weapon when the bullsquid needs to defend its territory.

The skin of the bullsquid is an olive-green to brown colour and is extremely tough, with a mimicry pattern allowing it to blend in within the Xen habitats. Its underbelly has thinner, more cream-coloured skin.

The creature's legs are heavily muscled, allowing it to run at exceptional speeds and even jump. Each leg has a large spike protruding from its primary joint, which is more like an elbow than a knee, and end in peculiar, black hooves.

The bullsquid’s most striking feature is the mouth, filled with needle-sharp teeth and surrounded by several blood-red tentacles, each ending in a single, sharp point. These are used to grab and hold prey, as well as for shovelling food into the mouth. Flanking the mouth are two, milky-white eyes, prividing it with excellent sight. Two nostrils are located just next to the eyes.

Behaviour

The bullsquid is first and foremost a predator. It will relentlessly attack and pursue anything it perceives as prey and attack with unmatched viciousness. They are extremely territorial and protective, and will attack any trespasser within sight, which is excellent. When choosing their territory, bullsquids prefer wet, warm habitats.

Attacking

Its low profile and speed allow it to close in on the target and quickly kill him with powerful roundabout spins ending is a strike from the bullsquid’s large tail and ferocious bites, using both teeth and tentacles.

Alternatively, the bullsquid can choose to spit an extremely corrosive blob at the target, with incredible accuracy, in order to incapacitate it before closing in. Headcrabs appear to be the bullsquid's preferred meal.

Triva

  • Dr. Eli Vance lost his leg to a bullsquid whilst moving Dr. Isaac Kleiner to safety.
  • Bullsquids are neutral towards houndeyes and will refrain from attacking them, provided they do not provoke them.
