The Black Mesa Research Facility is a fictional complex located in the desert of New Mexico, United States, and is the setting for most of the events of the computer game Half-Life and its expansions.

[edit] Background

The Black Mesa Research Facility was built over decommissioned Missile Silos during the 1950s but has grown from there, in many cases eating into the Mesa in which is rests. The area is basically a vast government institute looking into every scientific discipline. Although much of the work seen in the events of Half Life is centred on a Military application - the base still serves to decommission nuclear weapons. Much of the Facility that is seen by Gordon is classified research; including the development of high-tech weapons and defense systems, research into extra-dimensional travel, teleportation, and the study of Xen.

Through Dr. Eli Vance’s comments about living with Alyx and his wife at Black Mesa, it can be assumed that some of the staff had families residing within the complex. While much of the information about Black Mesa is found in-game, Blue Shift’s manual sheds some more light onto the life of the complex; Barney’s duty rotation is printed in French – suggesting that the complex employs international staff. As much as it is an annoying in-game feature, it should be noted that Black Mesa contains many automated machine-gun turrets.
