RPS Left 4 Dead versus mode impressions
Posted @ 11:58 AM, November 5 2008, By: AciD In News
Rock, Paper, Shotgun have posted their impressions on Left 4 Dead versus mode.
This is how multiplayer should be, people! One side deliberately over-powerful, the other side constantly respawning and aiming to grief as much as they can. And even when being trounced, that experience was a lot of fun. It might feel like running with a bungee cord tied around your waist, but it’s still entertaining when you fall flat on your face and get flung backward.
Pure cinema. Very funny. Very brutal.

Left 4 Dead Pre-Orders 60% Up on Orange Box
Posted @ 7:04 AM, October 10 2008, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, News, Steam
According to this Edge Online report pre-orders of Valve's upcoming survival-horror-co-operative-shooter-extravaganza are 60% higher than those for the Orange Box.
Valve managing director Gabe Newell has this to say regarding the pre-orders:
"People had really strong reactions to Left 4 Dead when we started showing it. Our pre-orders are running 60 percent ahead of Orange Box. This in combination with the fact that it is a new IP made us think that an extensive marketing program made a lot of sense."
Valve have launched a massive promotional campaign for the game costing $10 million and covering television, online, print and outdoor advertising. The promotional posters for the game (as seen below) feature the logo of the game, the disfigured hand that is now synonymous with the game.
These advertisements will run hand in hand with a massive television campaign with 30-second adverts appearing on a wide variety of US TV networks from November 9th to the 28th. The ads will be mixing humour and horror, and I assume with bear classic Valve stylings.
The Xbox 360 and PC demo of the game is slated to be released in early November and will feature 1-4 player gameplay from the game's "No Mercy" campaign. Newell is also positive regarding the future success of the game.
"Well, Left 4 Dead has a long way to go to beat Half-Life and Counter-Strike, but our fans' excitement when they play the game has certainly infected us. It will be a top five title for the year, but beyond that we'll have to see how big it gets."
Pre-orders up 60% on the Orange Box, a $10 million advertising campaign? I am sure that Left 4 Dead will be a hugely successful game.

Valve on the Graphics/Processor Debate
Posted @ 12:49 PM, September 30 2008, By: Evo In News
In a sneak preview of an interview to appear later this week CVG have recieved word from Doug Lombardi concerning Valve's thoughts on the debate between putting the graphics card ahead of the CPU as the most important piece of the PC. "For a long time the GPU side has been leading the charge towards brighter, shinier games, and it usually ends up that whoever has the best looking game at shows like E3 usually gets game of the show. We've always looked at that shaking our heads thinking it's not always about the graphics. We've all seen games that looked really pretty and got all these awards but then it comes out and there's not much of a game there." Check it out here.

A Heavy Update
Posted @ 1:24 PM, August 12 2008, By: Evo In News, Team Fortress 2
Some of you may have thought that the Pyro Update for Team Fortress 2 packed in a whole heap of new stuff. While that was true at the time, the Heavy Update is going to come along and change the way we view Team Fortress 2 updates for ever. The update is going to be so big that a new Heavy Update website had to be created to pack in all the news that will be drip fed to us over the next week with the update being planned to go live next Tuesday. The update will feature three unlockable weapons and thirty-five all new achievements for the Heavy. In addition you can expect to see a whole new game mode along with five maps for it to launch. Furthermore there will be a new Payload map which will have more open spaces than Goldrush, and if that is not enough the community map, cp_steel will also feature in the update. Keep your eyes peeled here for new information, screenshots and a special installment of the 'Meet The Team' videos. For now, check out this page for the lowdown on cp_steel.

Mike Patton on Valve Voice Acting
Posted @ 5:57 AM, July 25 2008, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, Portal
Most of you will know Mike Patton as being a great singer for Faith No More, however did you know he was also involved in Portal and will be again involved in Left 4 Dead? Well you do now. In this interview with The A.V. Club Patton reveals some interesting stuff about his work with games in general as well as the Valve connection. AVC: You also had a brief appearance in Portal, the Valve game, and there's talk about you perhaps appearing in their game Left 4 Dead.
MP: I think what they did is they took some material that I'd already recorded for Portal—maybe it was vice versa. Basically that came out of the same session of work. Check out the interview here.

Valve and the PC
Posted @ 6:07 PM, June 27 2008, By: Evo In News
I happened across a very interesting article on Eurogamer earlier which can be viewed as a followup to the mini-conference Valve had with a select group of journalists last month. While there is a lack of any news regarding upcoming games from Valve, this is a very interesting article which looks at the role Steam is playing in keeping the PC as a leading games platform as well as the expansion of PC gaming in non-English speaking countries. It is well worth a read right here.

Doug Lombardi on the PC
Posted @ 4:01 PM, May 22 2008, By: Evo In News
Shacknews recently caught up with the voice of Valve, Doug Lombardi. In this first half of a two part interview Doug talks about the PC Gaming Alliance, the future of PC gaming and system requirements in current PC games. This is an extremely interesting interview and you can read a little bit of it now:
Shack: Does the responsibility lie somewhat with the hardware manufacturers to market their products in a reasonable way, or is it up to the developers to set sane requirements?
Doug Lombardi: Oh I think it's totally the fault of the developers. Totally the fault of the developers. I mean the graphics guys, their job to keep pushing the envelope, and as they push the envelope, move the lower-end cards down to a nice price point, so that there's always this evolution that's happening. If you're a hot rod type of guy, and you want to spend $400 on the latest thing, you want to have a smoking machine, and when Left 4 Dead comes out you want to run it at its highest resolution with killer framerates, and call your buddies over for a beer and make them all drool over your system, awesome. But if you're just a guy who wants a decent PC for less than a thousand bucks, and wants to be able to run games on it, there should be a card out there that runs games at a decent famerate and decent fluidity. Then it's on us to write for both of those guys.

Valve want a Wii (Game)
Posted @ 4:51 AM, May 2 2008, By: Evo In Steam Games
Doug Lombardi has revealed to CVG that there is a desire within Valve to make a Wii game, and there is also an interest in making an MMO RPG.
"I mean, I'm not making any announcements", he continued, "but there's a lot of desire internally to do something for kids, do something on the Wii."
Valve has also taken a shine to the MMO scene: "Gabe (Valve co-founder, Gabe Newell) is a huge fan of MMO RPGs and he's always wanted to make one," Lombardi said.
This all stems from Valve's plans to move further out of their comfort zone and try something new. However Lombardi also reveals that if anything happens, we won't see it for a few years.
The CVG interview with Lombardi should be arriving soon, but for now head here for the latest on the Wii issue.

New Medic Weapon Details
Posted @ 3:39 AM, April 16 2008, By: Evo In Team Fortress 2
Shacknews have managed to get all the latest information from Valve regarding the new Medic weapons due to arrive in Team Fortress 2 any time now. The weapons are known as The Blutsaugher, The Critzcrieg and The Ubersaw.
The Blutsaugher is unlocked after getting 12 of the new Medic achievements and will give you the chance to retreat from battle while staying alive. This weapon cannot get critical hits, but it will suck health from an enemy!
The Critzcrieg is earned after reaching two thirds of the new achievements. This new medigun uses its ubercharge to give its target 100% chance to shoot a critical hit!
Finally The Ubersaw which is unlocked after getting all 36 of the new achievements. The Ubersaw will take damage done in melee attacks and convert it into an ubercharge. Four hits from this will fully charge whatever medigun the medic has!
Shacknews also reveal that they will have hands-on impressions of the new content and an interview with Robin Walker soon!

Valve Want Free Console Content
Posted @ 5:09 PM, March 4 2008, By: Evo In Team Fortress 2
In a recent chat with Eurogamer Doug Lombardi talked about how Valve would like new content for Team Fortress 2 to be free on consoles. The interview can be found here.Asked whether that still meant for free, Lombardi said: "Oh, for free, definitely, as much as we can. You know, we don't have full say over that, but we have some say over how that works.
"So, for us, for free is the way to go. The gamers play the game, they want to keep playing the game, so we've collected their fifty bucks at the start, and once they're in the park, they can ride any ride they want in the park. So, for us that's been the philosophy." This obviously won't go down well with Microsoft who generally require all content to be paid for regardless of developer plans. Time will tell what happens with this, but for now read the rest of the interview here.

Valve aquire Turtle-Rock
Posted @ 10:59 AM, January 10 2008, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead
In a move which shouldn't really surprise many, Valve have acquired Turtle-Rock Studios, the development studio behind one of 2008's most wanted games, Left 4 Dead. The two companies have worked closely for many years and is a move welcomed by both parties. "We have been seeing very strong growth with Steam and Source, our content distribution and development platforms, up over 150% over the last 12 months. Given our expectations for Left 4 Dead and our long-standing relationships with members of the Turtle Rock team, this was an easy decision. It also gives us a base from which to expand our development activities in the Los Angeles area," said Gabe Newell, president of Valve.
"Left 4 Dead fills a long-standing demand gamers have had for a coop first-person action experience, and it will also help Valve's expansion into the console market," added Doug Lombardi, Valve's VP of marketing.
"Valve has had great success bringing in projects and teams such as Team Fortress and Portal. As I spent time working and talking with the creators of those products over the past several years, it became clear that this was the right next step for myself, my colleagues at Turtle Rock, our customers, and our products," said Michael Booth, founder and CEO of Turtle Rock Studios. "We are excited to be a part of such a visionary and forward-thinking company." More information can be found here.
