Left 4 Dead DLC / New Game Mode and SDK Details
Posted @ 12:36 PM, February 5 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead
We've been waiting patiently for details regarding Left 4 Dead downloadable content and the support it's going to receive from Valve in the coming year. The first release will be called the L4D Survival Pack. It is due for release this spring and introduces a new multi-player game mode, called Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode . A Critic's Choice Edition of the game is also heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack. In addition, for PC gamers and aspiring developers, the first Left 4 Dead release for the Source Software Development Kit (Source SDK) will allow the creation of custom Left 4 Dead campaigns that will be discoverable via L4D's matchmaking system. The SDK update is also due for release this spring, and is free of charge to all owners of L4D on the PC. Since Half-Life launched in 1998, Valve has made continuous efforts to expand the offering of its products beyond what's included on the day of launch. With Half-Life and Counter-Strike, and more recently Team Fortress 2, we've learned that we're no longer making stand-alone games but creating entertainment services. With Left 4 Dead we're extending that tradition by creating additional gameplay and releasing our internal tools to aspiring developers so they may also create and distribute new Left 4 Dead experiences. Indeed we shall Gabe. Winter is nearing its end.

Left 4 Dead Retail: 1.8 Million Sold
Posted @ 4:52 PM, February 3 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead
Electronic Arts has revealed that the retail release of Left 4 Dead on xbox 360 and PC has reached 1.8 million copies sold up till 2008. This doesn't include any purchases through Steam (being digital distribution and not figures EA has access to). Note this also omits any data from January and February of this year. As I'm sure you can guess, Steam sales are likely to be very high too. Shacknews. (thanks to hool10 for link)

First Information on L4D DLC
Posted @ 3:25 PM, December 29 2008, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead
The first little bits of information on Left 4 Dead DLC has emerged over on Shacknews. It is being reported that an announcement was expected from Valve regarding the DLC before Christmas. However, as is the way with Valve the announcement was pushed back and according to Valve writer Chet Faliszek we can expect details to arrive "shortly." Furthermore it has been revealed that the Dead Air and Death Toll campaigns will be fitted out with the Versus mode soon and that the SDK for the PC version will be made available shortly.

Left 4 Dead Blog Update: The Intro Movie
Posted @ 11:26 AM, December 5 2008, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead
The Left 4 Dead blog as been updated with the process the development team went through creating the introductory opening sequence we see in the Left 4 Dead trailers and when we open the game, setting the scene on the 'No Mercy' rooftop. They outline how it was new territory for the team since no other Valve games has a movie-like intro, and they had to go through a few drafts before getting to the well polished version which was released. Check out the blog to see the actual draft movies created and how things progressively improved. Most notably you'll see the old character skins, no lip syncs, some awful ideas, lack of animations and a ridiculous relationship vibe between Zoey and Francis (thankfully which was cut!). Really interesting to see the changes. Left 4 Dead blog.

Left 4 Dead Retail Released and New Games to Steam (GTA IV Pre-Purchase)
Posted @ 9:09 PM, November 21 2008, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead, Steam Games
Tonight I can see many people from the Halflife2.net Steam community group getting their teeth into Left 4 Dead, after the official release of the retail versions. Left 4 Dead's pre-order numbers surpassed those of Valve's 2007 blockbuster, The Orange Box, by more than 160%. That is pretty incredible. Steam has also released an update for L4D tonight - Fixed certain files for some users from being re-downloaded when launching Left 4 Dead
Also, you can now buy Tomb Raider: Underworld on Steam, and also pre-purchase the upcoming Prince of Persia title (Getting Sands of Time for free). Lastly, as we reported a few days ago, with Grand Theft Auto IV on it's way to Steam, this is now available for pre-purchase, with GTA Vice City thrown in for free. PoP available - December 10th, GTAIV - December 3rd.

Left 4 Dead Reviews
Posted @ 9:48 PM, November 17 2008, By: AciD In Left 4 Dead
We got two new reviews up!
One review is from TeamXbox:
Gameplay 9.5
It’s so immersive and satisfying to sling lead at an infinite number of creepy, crawly zombies! It’s not particularly deep, but there are far more moments that’ll make you grin goofily and move tensely to the edge of your seat.
Grapics 8.6 Some of the visuals are fantastic, such as the zombie movement and death animations, but there’s also a lot of sloppy terrain clipping and glitchiness that hinders the overall experience a tad.
Audio 9.1
It gets repetitive (as most games like this do), but there’s fun variety in the spoken lines and the sound cues of various boss zombies are great for determining proximity and direction.
Longevity 9.3
No, it’s not a deep journey, such as Fallout 3, but what’s there will probably have players battling for quite a while in the game’s competitive multiplayer settings.
Innovation 9.4
Valve takes what could have been a run-of-the-mill shooter and injects enough freshness into it that it should stand well away from the pack. It’s a great blend of survival/horror and FPS action.
Overall 9.1
Overall Score NOT an average

Second one was made by GameSpy:
Pros:
Intense, nerve-wracking experience; co-op gets even better as you add players; innovative, entertaining multiplayer mode.
Cons:
No real narrative in place; single-player offerings pale in comparion to co-op play; no searching for dedicated servers.
Score: 4.5/5

Posted @ 12:02 PM, November 10 2008, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead
Rock, Paper, Shotgun (yes them again!) have an exclusive first look at Left 4 Dead's Dead Air campaign.
They talk about the various stages in the campaign, they vary from a Greenhouse to an Office block and finally the Airport at the end of the campaign. They have a whole host of screenshots and it is well worth checking out.
