New Left 4 Dead DLC – ‘Crash Course’ Campaign
Posted @ 11:27 AM, August 4 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

True to their word, Valve continue to add content for Left 4 Dead by adding a new campaign titled "Crash Course". This campaign bridges the gap between the end of the "No Mercy" campaign and the beginning of "Death Toll" in the original game, expanding the game universe with new locations, new dialogue from the original cast, and an explosive finale.

The new campaign will be available in September. Changes for versus mode are coming too:
While containing both Survival maps and a Co-operative Campaign, the primary goal of "Crash" is to deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game's existing Versus campaigns. A recharge timer for infected teammates has also been added, and item spawn behavior has changed for more balanced gameplay.

This DLC will be available for free to PC, but will be 560 Gamer points ($7) on Xbox Live.

Destructoid has had the first play through, read about Crash Course here (spoilers!).
Left 4 Dead Update – Lobby Browser Added
Posted @ 6:30 PM, July 16 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

A new update has been released for Left 4 Dead tonight, the main addition being a new lobby browser.
The lobby browser (under Play Online) will show you a list of optimal games available for you to join. The browser pares down the thousands of lobbies and games currently being played to show you the best list of games available to you. This list includes official and add-on campaigns, including add-on campaigns you have not yet installed, making it a great way to discover them. You can filter by difficulty, official and/or add-on campaigns and by lobbies and/or games in progress.
Alongside this update there are several other small server and add-on campaign fixes as well as SDK changes. Full change log can be found here.

Left 4 Dead 1/2 Cross-Play Possible?
Posted @ 6:16 AM, July 8 2009, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, News

In an interview with Total Video Games Valve's Doug Lombardi has revealed that they are looking at introducing cross-play between Left 4 Dead 1 and 2.

One of the things that has been floating around is the idea of cross-gameplay with the original Left 4 Dead; is this likely? That's something that we're trying to work out right now, the details of it. So nothing specific to say today, but we understand that it's a very valid thing to be working on and looking at. With the MOD stuff, if you're making stuff for Left 4 Dead it will work in Left 4 Dead 2 with very minor amounts of work to bring it over. So we feel we've made good steps on that side and now we're looking at how we manage that for folks who buy the first game and sequel.

You can read the whole thing here.
Eurogamer Left 4 Dead 2 Interview
Posted @ 7:27 AM, July 2 2009, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, News

There is a new interview with Doug Lombardi over on Eurogamer concerning Left 4 Dead 2. You can read the whole thing here but in the meant time this is a nice little taste of what you can expect to read:

Eurogamer: So at the moment, you have separate teams working on Left 4 Dead 2 and supporting the original game?

Doug Lombardi: There's a couple of different teams, actually. There's guys working on Left 4 Dead 2, guys working on Left 4 Dead 1 stuff, and then guys working on the authoring tools for Left 4 Dead - the mod-making stuff. Regarding the Left 4 Dead 1 content, we'll be announcing stuff in the coming weeks, but there's nothing I can say about it today.

Left 4 Dead Blog – Custom Campaign Support
Posted @ 6:26 PM, June 19 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

An update from the L4D blog talks about the new system being added to Left 4 Dead to support custom campaigns made with the authoring tools Valve released a few weeks ago. The update will be available on Steam next week. Important additions:
  • Add-Ons - Third party campaigns are designed to be installed using a new Add-On framework. Content authors will be able to package up their new maps, along with new posters, models, and textures, into a single .VPK file
  • Matchmaking - When creating or searching for a lobby, a new option named "Add-on campaign" will let you select from among the add-on campaigns that you have installed. You can then find games or lobbies as well as create a lobby for that campaign. You can invite your friends, too. If they do not have the campaign installed, they will automatically be offered and an option to download it.
The authoring tools are also officially coming out of beta, and for details on packaging your new campaign see the developer wiki. Full blog update here.
“Freeman’s not done” – Lombardi
Posted @ 5:14 AM, June 3 2009, By: Evo In HL2: Episode 3, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, News

Doug Lombardi and Chet Faliszek have talked at length with Shacknews about Left 4 Dead, but Lombardi did drop a hint about the Half-Life series:

Shack: Most of us were not expecting Left 4 Dead 2 to show up at E3. You guys had teased more information on Half-Life 2: Episode 3 earlier in the year. Should we expect more on that soon?

Doug Lombardi: [laughs] Don't have a new date. Since we missed the last time, I'm not gonna put out another one. I've said this before, but Freeman's not done with his adventure. Stay tuned for more.

There is also a whole load of information regarding Left 4 Dead 1 and Left 4 Dead 2, perhaps the best bit of info is that 4 v 4 matchmaking will be coming to Left 4 Dead 1 sometime this month. Doug also commented on the sequel nature of Left 4 Dead 2:

Shack: What price-point should we expect?

Doug Lombardi: This is a full sequel.

Shack: So full price?

Doug Lombardi: Yeah. At the end of the day, this is going to be a bigger game than Left 4 Dead. It's five campaigns versus four, all five are playable in Versus mode, Survival mode out of the box, the new multiplayer game mode. Plus over 20 new weapons and items. It's a full sequel.

This is a really detailed interview, you can check it out here.
Left 4 Dead Stats Live & 40% Weekend Deal
Posted @ 12:07 PM, May 1 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

Firstly, Left 4 Dead is the subject of this weekends deal, being offered at a 40% discount, bringing it down to $24 | £16. If you want to try before you buy, don't forget Left 4 Dead is free for 24 hours today.

Yes, you heard right, the L4D stats system is back up and live (after a bit of a failure on the first launch). It seems the bugs have been ironed out, and luckily stats have been recorded since 12/12/08 with weapons stats tracking beginning 2/11/09. The stats are split into: Overview, Weapons, Versus and Survival.
You can also use your stats page to compare your statistics against other players, giving you a quick and easy way to see how your accomplishments measure up to your friends and find players at your own skill level. You can also track negative statistics (like damage dealt to other teammates, for example), giving you a good idea of which players to avoid
You can access your stats from the Community tab in Steam. See further information about the new stats system on the latest L4D blog post.

Left 4 Dead DLC Release Info
Posted @ 7:56 PM, April 20 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

Quick update from Doug Lombardi himself, noting that xbox 360 owners will have the downloadable content on xbox Live from 2am PST or 8am GMT.

PC owners will receive the free update "later in the day" of 21st April (Today in Europe!). A quick reminder the DLC will provide 2 new versus campaigns to play, as well as the new game mode, Survival.
Left 4 Dead Blog: Survival Mode
Posted @ 6:03 PM, April 16 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

Again, we have been treated to another update on the L4D blog, this time outlining the complexities of Survival Mode, the new game play mode whereby survivors must compete against endless hoards of zombies. Survival mode will be released as a part of the free downloadable content for PC and xbox 360 on Tuesday 21st April.

Summarising the blog update, Kerry and Scott talk about making Survival Mode more than just a continuous crescendo event and making it feel like a distinctive separate game mode. Rounds will increase in difficulty over time, but just increasing zombie numbers doesn't reflect this. Pitching various events at times where they cross over controls the pacing, such as:
  • Mob spawn frequency
  • Special infected spawn frequency
  • Number of each type of special infected
  • Total number of special infected
  • Tank spawn frequency
  • Total number of tanks
Survival mode will also have 'lull' moments for teams to reload, relocate for ammo, heal or seek out new items. We won't be able to camp in these rooms as...
As ammo piles provide a unique infinite resupply for players, they tend to be in relatively less defensible positions in the Survival arenas. This means making an all important ammo run is rarely a safe proposition and requires good teamwork and planning.
Sounds like a good idea to make survival mode a real challenge. Check out the full post on the Left 4 Dead blog, including a graph showing increasing spawn frequency.
Left 4 Dead Blog Update & Versus Gameplay Update
Posted @ 5:11 PM, March 25 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

The blog update outlines a few changes being made to Left 4 Dead, and that xbox 360 owners will fortunately be getting all updates to the game alongside the DLC which will be available on April 21st. Matching making will be seeing updates soon too:
With the upcoming release of the SDK, and the community servers already available on the PC, matchmaking is one place where the two platforms will diverge. A future blog post will detail our roadmap for PC matchmaking.
The full blog post can be found here. Also highlighted in the blog is the mention of "the update will contain a...very large, gameplay adjustment....changing to the melee mechanic in Versus", which has now been released tonight. A big change!
  • Introduced fatigue to the melee attack in versus mode. You will see a HUD display when your melee swing is cooling down
  • Boomer vomit will now pass through common infected
  • Addressed some surround sound detection issues
  • Fixed a rare crash when exiting Left4Dead on Windows Vista
  • Fixed a case where the complete all expert campaigns achievement was not being rewarded
We shall see how this changes Versus mode, since the smoker tongue improvement and the tank multiple target punch addition. I spoke to Chet tonight about these incremental changes to a large gameplay problem...
This isn't the last update, but we want to change things in a way that people can evaluate the change, if we change 50 things at once, we will get zero worthwhile feedback. This is also how we test internally, small changes at a time and then group them so we can understand their impact
Let us know what you think of the changes. Left 4 Dead update news.
Left 4 Dead Update released
Posted @ 6:58 PM, March 11 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

Loads of changes / fixes for this update. Some good, some I'm not sure about. But we will see how they play out. You can see the full list here, but the most important ones are below
  • Tank melee attack can now hit multiple Survivors in one swing
  • Fixed Tank punch being able to hit targets behind walls
  • Fixes to 'Tank parking'. The Tank will now run back and attack the Survivors if he becomes AI due to two players expiring the frustration meter
  • Fixed a case where the Tank was moving too slowly while crouching and being shot
  • The order that the teams play as Survivors is now determined by which team has the higher overall score. The winning team will play as Survivors first
  • The Smoker tongue can now target and grab victims through common infected
  • Increased the cone in which a Smoker can grab a target
  • Boomers that explode in mid-air will now hit Survivors directly below them with Bile
  • Reduced the damage that burning Hunters do to pounced victims
  • Adjusted the time at which players take over from bots to avoid 5 seconds of the bot standing idle while the player finishes connecting.
  • The scoreboard now shows the numeric value of a player's ping
  • Games in a finale are now joinable via the Friends and Steam Group games list
Interesting changes to the tank and smoker, let us know your thoughts. Steam News.
4 New L4D DLC Videos Including “Survival Mode” & IGN Hands-on

Below are the links to 4 new videos showcasing the new 'Survival Mode' which will be available with the free downloadable content release on PC and xbox 360. The videos show one of the survival maps from the Dead Air campaign, and the other three show action from the new lighthouse map.

Secondly IGN have enjoyed a hands-on play test with Valve and put down their thoughts here. Its a good read, with some great information about what to expect from Survival mode specifically. Some of the key points are as follows:
  • In all of the play testing that the Valve designers have done while creating this mode, none of them have ever survived past the 10 minute mark. The best so far was about nine minutes, with a team of elite players battling like crazy to keep one another alive. IGN's experience at Valve averaged around three or four minutes a round.
  • You'll get multiples boss zombies at a time; they often saw two or three hunters or smokers leaping around the battle while the mindless horde minions were everywhere. In one battle, there was a tank, a boomer, a couple of smokers, and a hunter hitting us at the same time. It's even possible to get two tanks at the same time
  • 12 Survival levels available, 11 of which are taken and modified from the existing four campaigns
  • There is one entirely brand-new level in the DLC called Lighthouse which the designers say may be the toughest level of them all
  • You can earn bronze, silver, and gold medals if you survive long enough. Though the medal times for each map will be tailored for each map, right now the basic idea is that you need to survive for at least four minutes to get bronze, six minutes to get silver, and eight minutes to get gold.
