The regular Infected zombies you'll encounter are controlled by a central computer
AI 'director' of sorts which manages the flow of un-dead monsters on the fly. There
are also four playable Infected that have special abilities and are more powerful
then the regular Infected. Click the links below to view their profiles.
There is also a fifth mutated Infected called 'The Witch' but this is not available to players. They are passive upon discovery by the players, but react with hostility to flashlights, physical contact, and gunfire in the vicinity. It will be able to kill a player in one hit, and has almost as much health as a Tank, making them the most dangerous of the infected. She has the resemblance of average infected, but can be heard crying to give the players a chance to avoid or attack her.
Playing As The Infected
The Infected do not have conventional weapons, instead they rely on melee attacks and special abilities. The goal of the Infected is simple: destroy the Survivors before they have a chance to escape. This may sound like an easy task, considering the hundreds of zombies on your side, but it's not. The three primary boss Infected are quite weak and will easily die from gunfire. Playing as an Infected is all about setting up ambushes, finding the right moment to strike in order to inflict the most damage.
Infected players can at any time bring up a menu to choose their preferred Infected character: The Boomer, Smoker, and Hunter (or random). The game does not guarantee to spawn as that Infected. The game only allows one Boomer, one Smoker, and two Hunters at any one time. This prevents everyone from hogging particular characters and allows you to always play your favourite if no one else is.
The Tank character works differently. Because of this characters strength, the AI director will only let you play it a few times throughout the scenario, including two at the same time during the finale. When the AI director decides to spawn a Tank, a player will be notified by an on-screen alert and allowed a chance to accept the role.
Advantages
The Survivors are limited to a linear path but the Infected are given an advantage by having access to various areas the Survivors can't get to. There are strategic points throughout the map where you will find hidden ladders only visible to the Infected. These ladders let you climb your way up to the top of buildings and other large objects to lay in wait. Infected can ambush the Survivors by jumping down from these positions. Infected also have the added advantage that they take no falling damage from these heights.
The Infected are not affected by darkness, observing the action with a red tinted 'night vision' which allows them to see even the darkest corners. This is perfect for sneaking around and hiding.
Much like the Survivors, the Infected have the ability to see outlines through walls, but these outlines are red and are of the Survivors. This means the Infected can see the locations of all Survivors with these outlines, and on standing still will be able to see the path most likely taken by the Survivors. Infected bosses will always spawn in front of the Survivors, so they will be able to see where the Survivors will be coming from and set up an ambush. It is possible for Survivors to hide from this x-ray vision and is achieved by standing still, turning off their flashlight and not shooting. This can often surprise the Infected.
- The Smoker – A creature with a whip-tongue able to grab the 'Survivors'
- The Boomer – An obese 'Infected' who vomits and explodes upon death... yuck
- The Hunter – An acrobatic roof jumping son of a gun
- The Tank – A giant beast overturning cars and throwing concrete slabs
