Widescreen!

Dumb question but... is there any way to do this on my GeForce4? I run 1024 smooth and nice, would this hurt my fps any? How would I turn it on? The 16:9 16:10 options just... well... dont fit, anyway I could do it... how to say, like movies, all letterbox.

What monitor do you have? If you have a regular LCD monitor then you cant do widescreen, you'll have to have a widescreen LCD to use it.

If you have a CRT you should be able to set it up to look fine, i got an Iiyama VM pro454 and i run CS:S 1280x768 (16:10 or whatever). Just set up the width and horizontal placement of the picture, then go into your options and fiddle with the vertical size of the image. I had to go down to almost 0% in my monitors options so you might find it doesnt work on other monitors.

As a guide i watched one of the binks and put masking tape where the black bars were on the edge of my screen, that way its easy to make sure you have the picture just right with no stretch. It looks great widescreen i much prefer it to 4:3 now, although it takes a little getting used to at first.

edit: sorry forgot to say about performance. Runs fine here 1280x768, 16xAf, 4xAA all settings to highest including water on reflect all, no vsync i get ~63fps in the VST. Without the AA i get about 78fps, so thats the biggest hit.

My PC:

XP-M 2500+ @ 2.4
1gb ballistix 4000 2.2.2.11
Abit Nf7-s
Radeon 9800pro 128mb.

I tried it and it worked good. My only problem is that things seem a bit smaller now since I had to scale it down to make it fit alright.

Maybe i'll look into a widescreen display though, it's pretty nice.

Yeah it does take a little getting used to, but after a while it looks totally normal and it feels odd going back to fullscreen . What size is your monitor btw? mine is 19" so even losing the top and bottom of the screen i still get a decent size image. Maybe on a 17" the picture will be getting a little on the small side.

I'M RUNNING WITH A 24" WIDESCREEN CRT AT 1600 X 1200 AND IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING I'VE EVER SEEN!!! ONLY STRANGE THING IS THAT i RUN IT AT 4:3 AND IT RUNS WITH OUT STRETCHING...DON'T KNOW HOW BUT IT LOOKS AMAZING.

If its running without stretching then it's just loosing a little off the top and bottom like a widescreen tv does when its receiving a regular 4:3 signal.

to show u that widescreen DOESNT CUT VIEWSIZE:

800x600

848x480

in hl1 engine games the engine just cuts off some of the frame in the top and the bottom, so if u dont have a widescreen monitor, dont use it on hl1 engine games.

Well, widescreen is closer to the perspective of humans than 4:3....it does look and feel more realistic.

btw: if you play widescreen on a normal 4:3 CRT Monitor, the image might burn into the screen after a few months.
So be careful

my Sony 17" LCD Widescreen renders it beautifully!

I was astounded the first time I ran Far Cry, as it was the first game to support widescreen that I had played. It was so beautiful, I will never ever use a CRT again if I can help it! The crisp brightness is not to be believed.

Hehe, if you're smart this is what you can do:

Set it on 16:10, it will switch to 1280x768.

Now, if your monitor saves the settings for every resolution, you can just adjust the height so it looks right.

So I play Widescreen on a 21" CRT.

I can see more on the edges, it's 1337. Plus I'm more comfortable playing it WS on a huge screen.

Same can be done with 16:9 EXCEPT it is a MUCH higher resolution so it runs sloowwwwww.
