how much polys?

Okay i have read multiple post and stuff talking about the poly count of HL2 but they has been from 2000-8000. But i heard that it was going to be like 5000 from a interview. So is anyone sure about this?

What is the polygon budget for models?

We target between 3000 polygons (i.e.: headcrabs) and 7500 polygons (i.e. Alyx, the Gman) for characters and monsters, depending on function and how many we hope to have on-screen simultaneously, and we have several stages of LOD (level of detail) models with drastically reduced polygon counts for when things get smaller in screen space (further away). We're targeting around 2000 polygons for our viewmodels, which of course do not LOD.

I don't get why they are only keeping it at 2000 polies. And does that mean that there will not be high poly and low poly weapon models?

the weapons will not use lod, and I don't think you can have a highpoly and a lowpoly model.
maby that's why 2000 is the "limit" cause they want the mods to be playable on older computers..
We will find out when the game ships..
maby 6000 polys is possible on dx9 card? who knows..
