What was the HL 1 Alien Ecology?

Don't know if this will help with HL2 but here is as best as I could figure it out. Any help or suggested corrections would be cool.

Nihilanth was "in charge" of the aliens and was basically an overgrown Xenmaster (floating thing). Note that it certainly had telepathy (it projected thoughts into Freeman's mind in later levels) and apparently could predict the future (It seemed to fear it's death at Freeman's hands by it's statement "not you alone"). It must have "controlled" it's army via telepathy. Though Freeman kills Nihilanth ending the Alien threat, it may well have been merely defending itself from the very real threat of whatever organization the G-Man works for. Note the G-Man himself admits they have now conquered the "border worlds" and also note that we did enter their world first. In fact I was half expecting a sequel where Freeman would have to return Xen to it's rightful owners to thwart the G-Man.

The Xenmasters were members of the same race as Nilhlanth and were the dominant species on Xen in the same way we consider Men to be the dominant race on Earth. It is unclear if Nihilanth dominated, coordinated or if they were all part of a hivemind.

The aliens slaves where a semi-sentient race under the control of the Xenmasters, receiving their orders by telepathy and forced to obey by the collars they wear.

The Alien Grunts were not a race at all, they were manufactured warriors! In one of the later levels you spend time in factory where they are made. They are stored in barrels until needed.

Gargantua. No clue. I can't help but think these are Xen versions of tanks. What on earth could they have evolved to fight? Would they ever fight with grunts, slaves or xenmasters?

Gonarch. Hive mother of the Head crabs. Once again semi sentient.

Head crabs. What can I say, Xen pest? What exactly did it evolve to attack and control? Perhaps alien slaves? Does the host provide food to be come a Gonarch?

Bullsquid. Ah the noble bullsquid, Lion of Xen. Simply local fauna. Does it eat Head Crabs or recognize them as a threat?

Hound eye. Again local fauna, clearly a rung down of the food chain from the bullsquid.

Barnacle. Local flora or fauna? Either way it must eat headcrabs, insects and possibly houndeyes.

Tentacles. I think these are bioengineered, rather like the Gargantua. What could be stupid enough to get eaten by them?

Ichthyosaur. Top predator of Xen's seas? Good theory, except how can fragmented planetesimals have an ocean? Perhaps an import for yet another realm?

Well more questions than answers, but that is game logic for you. Comments?

sounds pretty good to me. Yeah I never thought of the role that the boss at the end played. You do have a point of how it may have controlled the army but maybe this (and many other unanswered questions from Half Life) will be answered in HL2. But we all have to remember that there is just going to be more questions in HL2 because HL3 will come out in the next 10 years maybe?

Anywho, yeah sounds like you have the game figured out...or maybe not!

How about the snarks? More pests?

And while we're trying to make sense of this... how the hell does anything survive on a fractured planetesimal?

Maybe Xen isn't the planet of origin for these aliens.

What I think is that the Headcrabs, Bullsquids, Houndeyes, Barnacles, Tentacles, Ichthyosaurs and Snarks are all native Xen wildlife. The slaves were natural Xen inhabitants, most likely living in nomadic tribes; a species on the brink of civilization as we know it. Nihilanth, the Xenmasters and their army of Gargantuas and Alien Grunts are foreign to Xen. They invaded Xen and enslaved the slaves (duh). The G-Man calls Xen the 'Border World' which leads me to believe that it is a colony of the Nihilanth people, and that they have other different colonies besides Xen.

The scientist said:
"Did you see it? They say it was hauled from the challenger deep but I know this creature didn't swim in terrestrial waters until a week ago!"

Good post, but all totally speculation. Calling a creature you kill in a game "semi-sentient" is a little silly. How would you know?

I think that the Vortigaunts were at least as intelligent as a human... they shout things at you when they attack.

I also believe that the Xen Masters, Grunts and Vortigaunts were all related species, due to their similar body plans (three arms and similar mouths).

I've said before that I think that the Xenians were only defending themselves, both from the kidnapping and poaching human scientists, and from the creatures of Race X...

And I've read some speculation on a website that Xen is actually a large number of planet fragments in orbit around a dense mass, all inside a bubble of breathable atmosphere... remember, Xen may be in a parallel universe, which could mean it has somewhat different physics...

err its a game. the aliens are there to kill. don't read so much into it

i never really thought Half-Life had much of a story. Ok its got a detailed environment and atmosphere, but the story is cliched and lacking depth. Half-Life 2 should excel in this field.

I think that the masters, grunts, and slaves are all related species, just one of them (masters) became more advanced and took control of the others. I dunno where Nihilanth fits in, tho if you ask me it looks like it was manufactured, or unnatural somehow, maybe built specifically to lead the xen armies? Same with the xen masters, when you kill them and they fall down, the top of their head splits and you can see one of those crystals inside, kinda like the big N, my guess is that they enhanced themselves somehow to become more powerful. Also, where do the race-x aliens fit in? are they enemies of the other Xen aliens, or are they even from xen?

Easy, Freeman wasn't wearing a control collar. They merely communicate telepathically. The slave obey the commands because of the control collar.

Hmmm, Good point about the grunts having the same body type. Still I maintin they were clearly manufactured. They pobably just based them on DNA (or whatever) they are farmiliar with.

Well, the slave were smart enought to operate machinery and factories. The Grunts had to be smart enough to act as military units. And of course the Xenmasters were almost certainly smarter than their captives.
