Machinima

I Admit it, I'm a machinima fan. Especially well made machinima. My one gripe about Machinima is that too much of it is translated into AVI/MPEG/MOV/Whatever instead of keeping it run in the actual game engine. I remember the great Quake 2 Machinima like father frags best and out late, I think that was the name. Anyways, I just wanted to get everyones opinion on the machinima in game/out of game.

I also want to add that HL2 Machinima should be great considering you don't even have to record a demo file. You just make the map and use scripting to make the virtual actors act out the scenes. Should be great!

Being the leader of the machinima team for HL2, I'd like to offer up some extra information here. According to Yahn Bernier, Source will be able to output machinima offerings as a series of images for usage in Premiere or similar software. These images will be at a fixed framerate and a fixed resolution, and are based on the scripting created in level, accompanied by a wav file with the audio you used. They will be including machinima tools (replicating some of the functionality of Premiere), and we will still be able to use demo files, so it looks like everyone should be served well.

Out of curiousity, why do you prefer in-game machinima? The advantages of out-of-game are numerous:
-Higher quality (as rendering doesn't need to be real-time)
-Larger audience
-Everyone can see the highest quality

Well I like the fact that I can play it with extreme resolution, and true to the game quality. Not much else to say really. I know most games can't do machinima in game very well, but it's awesome when they can.

What annoys me about out of game stuff is that it is the highest quality and then when the video ends its back to me shooting up the place at 640x480 with 16 bit colour and everything on low

Like it's teasing me.....

Machinima is the term for movies made with a real-time 3D engine (not like Pixar's, which can take up to 90 hours to render a single frame).

With Valve's tools, we'll be able to set resolution, bit depth, and any number of other things to high.

Do You have to tag complex words onto something so simple it confuses me

In game stuff is fun, i even made quite a lot of halflife "short stories" which were annoyingly lost when my harddrive broke. The out of game stuff though, generally seems to be put together better, as it can be edited a lot more easily.

What annoys me with the out-of-game stuff, is that the downloads can get quite large. And even though I'm on a 1mbit DSL line, it's a pain to download for example all the red vs blue episodes. But that's just me whining probably
