Ultima V Lazarus

http://www.u5lazarus.com/

Lazarus is a remake of ORIGIN Systems' classic computer RPG Ultima V, which was released for the first time in 1987. If you have never played any of the Ultima games, you might want to visit The World of Ultima to find out what the series is all about. Lazarus is a mod using the Dungeon Siege engine from Gas Powered Games. It features an enhanced storyline, characters, and setting based on the original Ultima V. We want to keep the original story intact as much as possible, but we've also sought to improve the game with new side quests, a deeper and richer plot, and enhanced dialogue. In addition, we've added several entirely new NPCs.

These guys worked for 5 years to give you this awesome mod that recreates one of the best RPG's out there. I highly recommend it. It's running on the dungeon siege 1 engine, you'll need the latest patch or the legends of aranna version before install. There are still a couple of bugs, but the team is hard at work on a 1.1 patch. But the mod itself has nothing to do with the simple hack 'n slash gameplay of regular DS.

I guess halflife2.net isn't the most RPG-centered place, but if you're into those kind of games, you'll certainly appreciate this one. I've never seen such a polished mod before. I'll warn you by saying this is one of those games where you have to actually print the map, use your brain, take a few notes on REAL PAPER, and read a lot of the conversations and solve a lot of intriguing quests. But the gameworld is so big, so complete, you'll soon be glad they made it this way.

I actually beat the original Ultima 5 back in the day.

Play it now and I doubt any of us would have the patience to play for more than 5 minutes.

I don't own Dungeon Seige but maybe I'll buy it after I check out this mod.. It looks pretty sweet... I want to see how complete Britannia is.

Britannia is huge and it's so much fun to once more run around it. I never played 5 before, the first pc game I ever bought was 6, and I played every ultima up to 8. U5 was just to old for me.

About the patience thing, yeah, I guess most younger players won't have the patience, but then again it's just a guess. I really don't know. The graphics are up to par with modern games, it's the game mechanics that are ... different. But that's exactly why I love this game. Some would call a game like Deus Ex non-linear. hehe. Try one of the ultima's (or this mod) and see what non-linear really means. So much freedom just begs to be explored and enjoyed on a more relaxed pace.

The mod is awesome. I played for a couple of days now, I admit the bugs are a tad annoying, but the team said on their forums they'll release the first patch around new year, so right now I'm just doing random small quests and gaining XP/levelling up, as most of the bugs are related to dialogue or teleportation. With such a huge game, it's kind of inevitable. But the players have already submitted a lot of the bugs that will be corrected with the 1.1 patch.

Again, awesome mod.

Wow. This looks great! Personally, Ultima IV was my favorite, but V was really great too. I might have to pick up Dungeon Siege for this (too bad its the only thing making me want to buy the game :)).

It really is an amazing efort, posted about it last week: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=98095

The patience required to play it is a lot less effort than you might imagine. I would recomend it without reservation.
Possibly the first mod to be better than the game that spawned it.

PATCH 1.1 IS RELEASED

It solves a lot of problems, and adds the minimap so you can navigate more easily. You can download it from their mainpage at http://www.u5lazarus.com/

SAJ, you wrote lazerus, not lazarus. That's why my search for previous threads turned out negative.

The game is awesome, hot scoobity-diggity-doo.

I meant none of us would have the patience to play the ORIGINAL Ultima 5, which was still run with Ultima 1ish graphics. (just square cells)

I've been thinking about this game for a few days now... Dungeon Siege is only $20 bux new now, or even less if you can find it in a used section.. so I'll probably scoop it up today or tomorrow.

They released the soundtrack. You can download it @ http://lazarus.thehawkonline.com/music.html

The music is one of the dominant aspects of this mod. I don't think I've stated enough how much effort went into this mod, but listening to the tracks will speak for itself. You can dowload the whole zipped package, or listen to the tracks individually. I especially recommend the song "stones", wich is the most famous ultima tune.

They also released another patch to correct another set of small bugs (1.1A). That's two patches in a little over one week! The crew is so dedicated to their mod, I've never seen anything like it.

Go ahead and try it!

lol

I come from a time when these were awesome graphics:
ULTIMA 1 http://www.oldschooldos.com/screens/ultima1.png

In fact I used to make games like this when I was a kid. I remember drawing a really cool looking dungeon door with point to point coordinates like "DRAWTO 345, 345" using BASIC.

I remember my best friend's DAD played this all the time:
ULTIMA Exodus http://www.nesfiles.com/NES/Ultima_Exodus/Ultima_Exodus_cart.jpg

For years I've been trying to remember what game this was! I found it on image search. .. my brother had a "really fast" 486DX2 and so I bought this to play on his PC:

Ultima 1 ? http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/reviews/games/ultima1.gif

this was the first IBM-compatible PC game I ever bought

Ultima's a great series, my fav Ultima was probably Ultima 7.. Both part one and two and both the expansions..
Thank god for the Exult that allows me to run'em perfectly under WinXP, even with added features!
