computer freezes at load screen, please help!

hi guys, i recently got HL2 and after i get to the menu screen and i try to start a new game the screen/comp freezes when it says loading. ive been patient and waited but i always have to hit reset....

heresa a quick rundown of the hw...

athlon 64 3000
1 gb of ram
nvidia 6600
windows pro 64

Have you installed the onboard (I presume) sound card? That fixed it for me.

Oh, and if you have a firewall, make sure it lets the game through.
