It was for the PC...I remember you picked what ship you wanted *one of them was a smiley face..* and you started out at your home world. You took your ship to other planets in teh system *the entire map was compried of squares...so the minimap would determine what sector your in easier...anyway, when you got to an empty planet, you would push your shovel button, and take up the minerals of the planets...and take it back to a populated planet with little to no resources, and sell it to them. You could buy more storage for resources, energy, better weapons *one which is neat, you shoot it at the enemy planet, and it kills everybody..* The enemy obviously has their own ship to run around with. They were really easy to kill if you had alot of these big black bomb missle thingies that when they exploded, the screen started to shake.

One was a smiley face? So it was ASCII. Could be made using the game engine ZZT or MegaZeus. I know that doesn't help much. Was it Free or Pay?

ok seriously, it's not freaking pong, wow, donkey kong.
Although I remembered something. You could use a Neutron Bomb. The style of gameplay was pretty easy as well, you'd left click, lazers...right click were your missles/bombs.

Could it be Starglider (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/starglider)? Or Starglider 2 (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/starglider-2)?
That was all that came up on a Google search for a game with "neutron bomb" and lasers.

Warpath 97 plays best on a Pentium 90 or better (and that is an honest appraisal, not one of those 'works great on a 286!' promises you see on the game boxes). I've played it on a 486/66 and the frame rate is OK, but not smooth.
But it requires Windows 95 (or later) which pretty much rules out a 486 computer anyway. If you want to play over the internet, you will also need an Internet Service Provider (but hey, if you're reading this WEB PAGE, then I guess you have that covered).
Christ on a bicycle!!1 You'll need an Alienware to play that thing1!
