FEAR should have taken it. :/
F.E.A.R. was one of the finalists though. :P
But I think RE4 really deserves it, Capcom did a really fantastic job on it and I like how they did it different (gameplay wise) than the original Resident Evil games.
God of War are one of those awesome games as well though, one of the best games on the PS2 imo.
It’s hard to choose a Game of the Year, but I agree with Gamespot’s decision.

I'd have to agree. RE4 > all others this year.

Yeah pretty much. Resident Evil 4 rocks. And FEAR doesnt come close to it at all.
Biohazard 4 definatly deserves it. The game is truly amazing. Very polished, very refined and constant quality and action all the way through. After the first couple of bosses I was woried the quality of gameplay and effort put into the game would drop like most games. But as I just said, truly spot on :D

RE4 and Battlefield 2 deserve the GOTYs this year I'd say.

RE4 for the win. Can't think of any other game that deserves it more.

WHAT!? FEAR is SHIT compared to RE4. IMO of course. Please play and beat RE4 then say that again...I think you'll agree.

Well, F.E.A.R. was a blast... but yeah, it really doesn't compare to RE4.

i agree, resi 4 was fantastic, the combat was so satisfying, i hope all games start to include the damage system resi 4 had, capcom are doing good stuff these days, resi 4, dmc3, killer 7

FEAR should have taken it. :/
Fear isn't fit to wipe my ass, yeah, its good, but its not that good.
Resident Evil 4, well, I'm not sure. The combat was truly awesome, but surely the repetition, bad voice acting and plot could have bogged it down? Probably not, since the combat lets you forget about it all.

Of course it's the best game this year. If it was released last year it would have been then best then too ;)
FEAR didn't deserve game of the month.
I don't like Gamecubes.
Resident Evil 4 is available for Playstation 2 as well.
I like the interactive cutscenes in RE4, a good example is the fight with Krauser.

Yeah, I had to drop my habit of putting down the controller to watch cutscenes in case I have to dodge.

Yeah, I agree with that. This was an appauling year for games, but RE4 really stood out.

I think FEAR deserves the 'Least imaginative level design' award.

I said it before, and I'll say it again. I don't think any games deserved a "Game of the Year" award. Not this year. Nothing gave me the shock and awe that I seemed to recieve all of last year.
If anything, I thought maybe Age of Empires 3 was great. But that's about it...

Am I the only person who thought Civ4 should have gotten best game? Oh well, at least it got best PC and best strategy.

I still think Civ 4 tears the nuts off FEAR.

Agreed. It also deserves 'worst looking gun models' too.

I thought Civ 4 deserved it too, considering I've not really bought that many games this year, and it was my favourite.

I concur.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks FEAR is quite frankly the most over-rated game of this goddam year.

Confession: I have never played a Resident Evil game. Ever.
Should I play the fourth, or is it the sort of thing you should really have been there from the begining?

It really doesn't matter. I haven't played any of the previous Resident Evils either and I loved this one.

Play the fourth. I've really never played any of the others, save for a few minutes at a friend's house. RE4 is just... :O

I honestly envy you.
Pick up a GC (if you don't already have one) and get the Resident Evil 1 remake and Resident Evil 4. I'd happily pay 100 quid to forget these games and be able to play them again.
You need no knowledge of the previous games to play no. 4 btw.

I haven't played a Resident Evil game either. Never owned a console except an old Nintendo system which played Super Mario Bros.
I do have Resident Evil 2 for PC, though. But I got it along with Carmageddon 2, and Carmageddon 2 consumed most of my gaming summer back then. Besides, the few times I played RE2 for the PC, I just couldn't get a hang of the control and ended up being zombie nosh. Some games are just way better when played on the console, I suppose.

RE4 is a masterpiece, but if you aren't into survival horror it's a sub-par game.
A sub par game that I really wish I had. ):
