How the hell do Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, and Kanye West get nominated for album of the year!? I haven;t paid much attention to the Grammys, since I have typically thought they were complete and utter bullshit and never recognized true musical talent, but this is absolutely ridiculous. Also, U2 has seriously gone down in quality, and while I admire their older work, the new stuff just doesn;t click and seems incredibly hackneyed and contrived. Awards shows like this make me hate popular music all the more.

Sure they suck now but they gave 4 to Walter and Donald in 2000 so at least at some point they recognised talent!

Although I must say it is a grim day when Mariah and 50 Cent are put in the same category as the worlds greatest artists.

oh shit, I had completely forgotten about 50 Cent... truly, they have lost any shred of credibility they may have ever had

I love how the grammy's always vote old bands for best new artist. Last year or so I believe Fountains of Wayne and Modest Mouse were nominated. Fountains of Wayne's been around since 1995. Modest Mouse's been around since '93. And now, what is this? Fall Out Boy? Keane? FOB came out at least 3 or 4 years ago. Keane came around in '97. And hell, they're the only decent band in the catergory.

Are these awards judged by a panel, or put to public vote?

I have to believe it's the latter.

pfffft award shows are stupid. its never actually about the most skilled or talented muscisians, just about popularity. I can think of a ton of albums that came out this year that blow away anything even nominated on there. Gwen Stefani? for that POS song with the stupid lyrics "this shit is bannana nana nananss'" wtf. who votes for this shit.

the grammys have never had much legitimacy ..I remember when they added a heavy metal catagory and Jethro tull won over Metallica (the year that metallica had their big breakthrough album) ...you should have seen the looks on people's faces

Jethro Tull is metal?

that's why everyone was so surprised ..even Jethro tull bandmembers looked shocked they had won over Metallica in subsequent interviews:

They went on to win a 1989 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, beating odds-on favorites Metallica. The award was particularly controversial as many did not consider Jethro Tull hard rock, much less heavy metal. The fact that it was the first time a Grammy geared towards metal was presented it was seen as a particularly hard blow and insult for heavy metal fans (after this, and perhaps because of this, separate Grammys were awarded for hard rock and heavy metal in the following years). Under advisement from their manager, no one from the band turned up to the award ceremony. They were told that they had no chance of winning, lucky for them, as soon as they were announced the winners metal fans in the audience boo'ed. In response to the criticism they received over the award, the band then reportedly took out an advert in a British music periodical with the line, "The flute is a heavy, metal instrument!".

I'm pretty sure that The Simpsons did a parody of that during their "Behind the Laughter" special. Something along the lines of
Guy awarding thing: ...and the award for best hardcore thrash metal album goes to...Simpsons...Christmas...Boogie?
*Simpsons walk up on stage to booing and such*
Uh, yeah. The Simpsons doesn't have a lot of good things to say about Grammies, actually. They're probably the brunt of the majority of their jokes dealing with awards of excellence and whatnot.

And now I'm kind of off-topic. Yay.

Ugh, the Grammys and just about every other award show out there are not worth a squirt of piss to me. They are so ridiculously mainstream and vapid, as reflected perfectly by the nominees, that they have lost all credibility with me and hopefully most other free-thinking individuals. Who in the world actually cares about this garbage???

Oh wait, that's right: there's 50% of the US population that is dumber than the average American. That's a lot of idiocy, so its all too easy to see why this junk sells--Grammys, Emmys, Spike TV Videogame Awards, Presidential Elections... :hmph:

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure its a panel... except the panel is made up of industry reps who are either working for the labels themselves or are bought paid for.

Honestly, award ceremonies are normally just great big circlejerks for things that sell well. As Dreamthrall said, they're just looking after their real bosses, not the actual quality of the music.
