Half-Life 2 Release Pushed Back

Leading game news website; Shacknews (http://www.shacknews.com/) has confidently confirmed the delay of Half-Life 2 (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/28497). A mere week away from apparent release, Doug Lombardi of Valve Software has confirmed a delay in what Shacknews consider an official statement.

While many of us may wallow in disapointment, self-pity and disbelief, Shacknews can assure us with absolute certainty that their e-mail from Doug is legitimate. I will mention that this apparent announcement was sent out at 9pm Pacific time with mention that they're having problems with Valve mail servers (the supposed reason not everyone was informed of the delay), which is keeping people skeptical.

We'll keep you updated with any further information as soon as it becomes availible to us.

Thats strange Valve's mail servers went down at the same time he sent that e-mail. There's always the possibility their mail servers got hacked, and someone mass mailed the message under Lombardi's address just to **** with everyone. If thats the case, then thats really quite funny. But that would explain the downtime for the servers. OR everyone was just so pissed off they all emailed Valve at the same time and overloaded all the servers. Either way I'm sure there will be some official official announcement tomorrow. Even if the email is legit, it seems kinda shitty to tell only a few websites through e-mail, instead of making some kind of notice on the Valve or Steam websites... Again, I'm sure there will be answers tomorrow. And if the email is true, then even the holiday release is in question, as it is just another "target" date. HL2 coming holiday season, 2005!

Who here is surprised? because I'm not and anyone who thought Valve would stick to a September release without getting people ready with adverts and advanced previews are silly. In my view this move is a good sales tactic and generates even more interest amongst gamers and a Holiday release?!? come on, Valve were always going for Christmas time. Personally, I don't mind a delay of about 1 month or so...
Honestly it would be only a mere 2% delay, over a 5 year development project...

I find all of this very strange. Concidering how calm Valve has been the whole time and the odd circumstances surrounding this "official statement" I would be surpriced if it's really true. I know there are good arguments for both sides though, but I can't really see any point for Valve to handle the situation like this. Of course unexpected things might come up, but if they really were to push the realease back I think they would have put the news up on official sites and emailed all news/fan-sites.

If there is a delay personally I don't mind the actuall dealy, I do mind the lack of an announcement though.

What Valve needs is an official hl2 site where people can get news without having to have a mass debate and have to trust (or not trust) endless news items of speculation across all forms of media.

This delay may be some mail server hacking, I don't believe it is but you never know. And official site with official statements would just make things a lot more pleasant for the while community. That being said it would cut down speculation and therefore all the free publicity......

Best marketing? Look at all the hype this will generate, even if it's for the wrong reasons. They're shrewd businessmen.

Actually, if they went gold on the 15th of this month they would have enough time to get it to the shelves. IE. UT2K3 went gold 10 days before it was suppose to be released, and what happened? It was on shelves on the day it was suppose to be released. It probably is right now basically "gold" but they may still be play testing to find any other little bugs there might be, but IMHO(in my honest opinion) the game is basically done, and should make the September 30th release date!

See i don't think its Valve delaying it (and how obvious it was to me anyways) but I believe that Valve must be more open with its core customers, Telling no one about anything and swearing everyone else to secrecy is the wrong way to do business and will lead to people getting upset. I know that Valve need to keep some things under raps to protect there product but they (Valve) must have known for a while now that the game had NO CHANCE of coming out 30th September.

Come on Valve a little give and take will keep the masses happy no matter when the game is out. Just don't have a release date, that would have been better.

Oh well. I read the other day Halo PC had gone gold, I will get this while I wait for HL2.

I do think the short notice is a bit sh*t.

I dont understand everyone saying they will get more money releasing it in the holiday season. As far as I can see they would get the same amount of money just spread over a longer period. People will rush out and buy it whenever it is release, and kids will still want it for Christmas.

Kinda OT question: Is it possible to make a singe-player mod for HL2 from xmas to May if we're 3 people & since it's a schoolproject, we have to put at least 100 hours at least into it? Granted, this project started about a month ago so we have a few hours gone already... But Blue Shift wasn't too long. A fact is something that can be verified or substantiated, unless you work at valve or have inside information that you are not telling us, its just a guess.

If they ARE recompiling the engine...we can blame it on nvidia for leaning on them because of the PISS POOR performance from nvidia video cards!

BBA, all of these posts are just speculations and if we could expect a x% of delay as "normal policy" of the vgames industry i want to remind how serious and correct (or just much clever) are 3dRealms (http://www.3drealms.com) when they never claim a release issue date until gone indubitably gold or, as for duke nukem 4 until it ships to stores(!) at the cost to look nasty to people - so if will be a delay i want to know why, after 5 years of total silence, Valve has told us a precise release date if they was not sure about that?

Hmmz... Some websites etc says that its gone gold and that the delay statement was fake while others say the statement is true... I really hope its fake and that its still scheduled for 30th... Can only speculate at this time... Any concrete evidence in either direction is much appreciated :)

I've read somewhere that someone was trying to talk about this with Valve or VU by phone,but they didn't get any answers.So maybe both emails are fake.(that's my very dream for now,i can't wait much longer)

There's a japanese Doug Lombardi interview from Tokyo Game Show.

Key things he mentions:
*Half-Life 2 will be available in 12 languages including Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Korean.
*The game will be released this holiday season, simultaneously worldwide.
*Doug seems to indicate that a Half-Life 2 expansion pack is already in the works and will be released next year.
