View Full Version : How well did F.E.A.R. run to you?

I can't believe it myself, I bought all high-end (3500+, X800XTPE, 1GB RAM) and still the game is running with lower FPS than anticipated. I was running at maximum overall settings at 1024x768. It was playable, but just barely.

I'd like to know how the game ran for the rest of you. If anyone where able to play it on overall maximum settings and still have an acceptable amount of FPS.

Added poll just for the hell of it.

I basically have the same rig. The only difference is that I have a X850XT in stead of ur X800XT. I was a bit disappointed by the peformance. I was expecting to run it at full settings without a problem, but I had to scale down a little.

I can't vote right now, because the demo had a problem with its installation step. Double click on the demo icon to install and it won't open.!!!!

I asked a mod at the official forums and told me to download it from another source. I m getting it now from a torrent site :|

Judging by the looks of your signature, I think it will run pretty well on your comp. :D

i played it on an Alienware 3.6 gig laptop with a 256 meg 6800.. the controls where awkward but it ran super smooth at maximum, apart from the odd hickup here and there, and just as it ends when that thing falls through the roof especially.

ran ok at high/max settings(although there is no high, its medium, minimum and max in the options)...on all max with 1152x864 it ran like crap...dropping some stuff helped...

It ran pretty well all settings to the max with 1024 x 728. But, it ran quite sluggish with all settings max on 1280 x 960, but still playable.

Same here, except with a 3.6 ghx p4 and 850xt pe. It runs fairly well at 1024 with fsaa off and trilinear filtering and most else on medium/high. Not great performance, but I am sure the final build will be much better optimized, especially given the specs they released.

i hope so anyway, it looks like the game might be needing 2gigs for max settings, i say that'd solve my stutter bug, could be time to get another gig...:|

I am gonna quote myself:

I just finished downloading it, My PC 1gb ram, 6800GT and Athlon 64 3500+, I maxed out every setting thinking that my PC would be a hot knife and the demo would be butter, jeez I was mistaken this game pwnd my pc, anyway volumetric fog is the trick, turn that off and the game ran just fine, then I had another problem, its mid night, as soon I got the corridor and saw that shadow passing before me I stopped the game, too scary for me, I will play tomorrow day light time... :E

to sum up, turn volumetric fog off, I have all setting maxed except that one, playing at 1024, AA 2x aniso 8x, fps hovering in the 70`s and down to the 40`s in big firefights, the game looks beautiful...

It seems that there is a way to force it, this was posted at the nvidia.net forums, I havent tryed myself but it seems it works, let us know

You can edit the cfg to get the 1280*1024 res.

It is stored here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Monolith Productions\FEARSPDemo

Edit the settings.cfg with notepad (here's mine)

"GammaB" "1.000000"
"GammaG" "1.000000"
"GammaR" "1.000000"
"BitDepth" "32"

Tip for performance enhancement:

Turn volumetric lights off.
Tone lighting down.
Tone shadows down.
Texture resolution to medium.

Before i did this, i had to play it on 640x480 on medium quality to get a decent framerate. After i did it, i now play it on 1024x768 with all settings set to maximum, (except for the ones mentioned above) and now i get awesome framerate with awesome graphics.

Luckily, I'm one of those people that don't need min.60fps to enjoy the game. On the TV you get 25fps, so if I get constant 25fps in a game it's still OK. I'd rather have even 20fps all the time, than 40-50 with slowdowns/freezes every few seonds.

soft shadows off, vsync off, volumetric light density at medium, rest maxed...very choppy, the stutter though is the worst, every new area i get a stutter, 2 gigs of ram time...

Same, i wouldnt have noticed that theres even a difference between 30 and 60 unless im told by the computer itself. Even if you do notice a difference it isnt much and not like "OMG I CANT PLAY UNDER 40FPS" like some people claim.....

Im kinda like that with aa and af as well..... i switch my games to using these features and not using these features, and when im acutally PLAYING and not looking at the changes, i dont notice a SINGLE DIFFERENCE. Wow, you running a card that cost 500 more than mine so that you can have slightly smoother diagonals, you rule.

It's all down to personal taste.

I notice a huge difference between 30 and 60 fps. So much so that I'd rather play with all settings on low at 60 fps rather than all on high at 30. 50 is the lowest i'm happy with, and even then it's very obvious that the rate has dropped.

It's also easier to aim with a decent frame rate, something which anyone who's clanned at a decent level will tell you. (dropping to 30 fps in a firefight against others with a high rate is a serious disadvantage. You can only be so precise with low fps)

Lastly, monitors and tv's work differently, and can't be compared like for like when it coms to framerate http://www.daniele.ch/school/30vs60/30vs60_1.html (30fps on a tv > 50 fps on a monitor)

Wow, thanks for the link, it was very informative

and besides I'm comfortable with 30Fps (perhaps 20Fps depending what game I'm playing) the reason being is that I use to play TA with 5Fps in heavy combat, and played HL in a 300x480 (I forgotten what the size was, but small) using software graphics not hardware, so I kind of was conditioned in being pretty laid back about this issue
