View Full Version : My Sketches/Serious Art (1 week or more)
Hello, youve probably seen me posting on the forums here recently or in the general forums. My name is Arlando Battle im 15 years old I live in Florida. Im quite a lonesome guy and I like it that way Ive been drawing seriously sense the end of the eight grade, but I've been drawing since I've been a little child to 5th grade. In 5th grade my sisters friend bought me a sketchbook and I filled it up with incompetent doodles. Rigt now im a sophmore in the 7th best school in the US, and Im hoping to graduate with an IB Diploma with a Higher level in art, so when I do goto art school I wont have to take as many liberal art/art history courses. Anyways here to the sketches Ill post them in numerical order from less - less recent to most most recent. Oh ya I have a similar thing on Conceptart.org but there's alot of people there with Sketchbooks and I feel that I'll get better as an artist quicker if people actually could view my work before its pushed off the page by another post.. if you have a CA.org sketchbook youll know what I mean :D.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/s5-1.jpg
Some oil pastels with hands, they turned out ok I don't really like them but I think oil pastels are kind of cool.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/s5-2.jpg
I love sphere kind of dark they came out to be withg my scanner.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/s5-3.jpg
More spheres a play on colors.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/s5-4.jpg
A hand in oil pastels, I don't like again.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/s5-5.jpg
My friend Lane I love his facial expressions, no I'm not gay.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/s5-6.jpg
My sister said this seemed sinister I just like it kind of but I wish I rendered the shading better.

Im trying to get better at getting the form and doing faces from my head but so far I;ve just been drawing each persons face in TIME magazine. Hopefully, Im hoping this will help. Also using Vanderpoels to get thoose eyes to look corrrectly like deep and meaningful.
Thats all :D/
I did this a few days ago, I was just scribbling and looking at this phootorep in blender mag its not exactly finished but i don t think i'lll ever work on it again.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/o3jox/70305.jpg
heres what i kind of wanted to achieve half way through
this kind of composition
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/o3jox/703052.jpg

Depth.. study and practise depth, perspective, all that. I love some of your pieces but they're all incredibly flat.
I dont like to make excuses but it might be my scanner/ with some of the depth issue.
I agree with the perspective I just always find it soo hard without a teahcer, though ive read books and I get really confused with vanishing points and practicing extreme perspective. Another thing I feel my sketchbook limits me. Im hoping to goto art store one day and buy some huge posters and good charcoal and just start. Perspective is fun :D

it's not your scanner that messes with the perspective. it just takes a whole lot of practice to make things look right. you're a much better artist than i ever will be anyway :)

Hey... I think they're fantastic. You will get no 'artistic eye' reviews from me. Because simply put, I don't have any artistic flair to compare those...
So from your average joe, let me tell you those are fantastic, and you are certainly showing a great sense of creativity in your drawings. They can only improve from here! Keep it up, bud.

Yar I like what I see.
This is better than what some A level students can produce, I can see you doing very well in any art classes you take.

First time actually doing this cartoony type stuff. Most of my previous art teachers denounce that "evil" anime style, since thats what most teenagers taking art are prone to draw maybe.

Dont think im ever going to finish. I was doing this for a girl but when i worked on the clouds I found out that it dried and my sun looks horrible as well but I DONT THrow away my art work if im displeased, I think all of my art has a soul of its own and if I threw it away its like throwing away myself... Weird I know.
Im working on some other peices expect another post by Thursday or Sunday of this week.

like your work, i see you are a hard working guy, i'd recomend, taking month or two and draw nothing but figures and faces from Michelangelo and Da Vinci and other classical artists (it helped me a lot), other wise, good job, keep it up, and good luck with the Art school
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/ninja1.jpg
This is a mannequin hand I got for free from nintendo I thought it would make a good barque(sp?) so I copied it but I didnt bother doing the barque type efect. Ill probably do the barque effect when Im a little bit older and I need something to draw. Oh ya sccizz00rrs.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/ninja2.jpg
Trying to make some depth I think I achieved that on the tail thing. Somewhat..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/ninja3.jpg
1 point perspective I think this looks 5x better in real life. Ill do some 2 point perspective and 3 point but I always get confused. Oh ya IS IT OK TO HAVE MORE THAT ONE VANISHING POINT AS LONG AS ITS ON THE SAME HORIZON???
Answer my question please those wary of art.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/ninja4.jpg
Still life that proved way to much time and a hassle so I just got some references made some faces.. ya im lazy ass :(>
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/ninja5.jpg
Spent a good little while yesterdya drawing this the DARk face took about 30 my face took about 2hours i was up till 3am and the femur/leg took awhile too and its still off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/ninja6.jpg
I need to work on getting more details so I jsut got a styrofoam cup and scribbled away it kind of sucks. ESChers work is really aweing especially hishands the way he gets EVERY single crevice it seems. I just want to eat his drawings lol.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/ninja7.jpg
WATER COLORS are fun. Especially when you do a cupz0r. Im trying hard with water color I just love this medium I feel its sooo Expressive besides oil paints. But I never use em so I dont know!!

sorry, just rulers go agaist my whole art phylosophy, and no, you don't need them, rulers are fake because nothing in this nature is "straight" so when you drawing with a ruler u screw yourself, or "fake it" i think so at least

Some of them are really good, but some of them (I'm guessing the older ones) lack a bit of structure, especially the portraits.
Nice work!
Howl, Ive been painting in water colors mostly.
Heres some work. Its late so i wont go into detail mostly water colors/ sketches thanks for all your critiques its really making me a better artist. Oh ya my .3mm RAN out of lead so i had to use my .9mm thats why some of my drawings may seem thicker/darker less control. But all is well I found the lead ;p'

Basically its about peoples mask and changing faces in different situations. Ill give you symbolism: shirt = changing state of iguana, keylocked inside cabinet = person locked inside themselves, sleeping is when we are most vulnerable. i dont think i did any more intentionally if i did i forgot but here is the picture:

Sparta :
A little art history para ti:
I find this comment offensive, im not trying to draw like anyone else. The difference between my art and their art, im guessing youre talkin about "their" as in artist like, Wes9000 http://www.wesleyburt.com/ and Marko Djurdevic(sp) is that they have loads more experience than me in anatomy and vast other art subjects such as live model drawing. I m not trying to copy them they are great conceptual artists of the day but in no way am i trying to copy them. Then again theres nothing wrong with copying so im not offended by that.
It seems liek youre trying to say that im trying to copy another persons style and failed. Which ive done neither im still learning my style, ive never been a fan of the blending stump, and eraser. Doing the cross hatch method is easier and allows you to get more tones without losing the over rall texture which you lose alot when using a blending stump.
Many a great artists use this method also such as the Northeren Ren. Artist Albretch(sp) Durer for you to deem this to a couple of artist on conceptart.org is pretty lame. I believe cross hatching got big when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press allowing the art to be distributed now in a form of a book. And Durer made good use of that with his etchings: For example

Depth, work on depth! Everything is so damn flat. Are you working at a bad angle? Draw from life. Sketchyness is good but work on making more confident and clear lines. "Nailing it in the first shot"
Proportion flaws in all your anatomy work. Study from life!
Draw, draw draw. Don't cover your people up in clothes, draw the naked form.
Lighting/Shading is excellent in some pictures, but the flatness deducts from realism alot.
Keep up the good work, don't give up.

Thanks alot Ill keep those in mind and to heart im currently beating my self about it. The reason i tend to draw people in clothes more is because im 16 most people would probably account that as a minor in florida so I dont know if its totally legal and ill have to ask my art teacher about doing the live nudes, also im not sure if I'd feel totally comfortable about it either.
Ill go for it none the less.

I wasn't talking about cross-hatching at all, and i wasn't implying that you failed at copying someone else. I was simply trying to compliment you and you read into it a little too much. Since it looks like you didn't know what i was referring too, it looks like i was wrong then and you weren't trying to copy anyones style (which is part of the process of learning).
And in the future please dont give me a lecture on art or the history of cross-hatching or any of that jazz while you're still in high-school.

I can see a sense of improvement as I move through each pitcure. I really like your style of abstract art too. :D

Sparta: No offense taken. Youre supposed to be able to learn anything from anyone, afterall this is an art forum geared at honest critiques, and how am I supposed to know what your credentials are; you could be an art history major or an archaelogogist so ;) Living by the rule of dont talk because youre younger blah blah really doesnt work, or back up the argument.

You've got creativity and talent, you just need to refine it.
It seems you have a thing for drawing eyes. I love drawing eyes myself. I don't know what it is about the eyes of a character but, IMO, it's one of the more important parts of the human form.

Here's my advice:
Do lots more of those 'gestures', you'll learn to get the proportions right, which is what I think is your biggest 'flaw'. First the overall lines and shapes, only then go to details! Just do lots of very simple, quick sketches without thinking about too much, try to express the human form in all sorts of postures with only a couple of lines. Then proceed to details little by little. Overall, you could be bolder, draw longer lines instead of numerous little ones, at least at first when you start drawing a picture.
Perhaps you could use a softer pen? Like 6b or something. Try to use more shadowing to create form in your graphics works, instead of strong contours. A softer pen will help with that. Well, I'm not a fan of cross hatch myself so that's also why. :P
Whenever you use colour, it's amazing! You have a really good eye for colour, there's definitely more potential and advancement there than in your graphics! It's probably partly because you are forced to do it more sketchily, not so much drawing strong outlines, as you do with graphics. I don't know how much you practise using colour, because even though there are quite few of those here, those few look really amazing, like you've spent a lot of time practising. If you have, I'd like to see more of them.
Oh and do you have ADD? Just looking at your avatar :D

Amazing. :)
Did you paint the vials from a model?
I think you could use some drawing practise with nude models, because you can obviously draw cloth, but the proportions of people are sometimes a little off... you know you remind me of Leonardo for some reason. :)
Sparda: Hehe, thanks and sorry for freaking you out. If you dont mind answering which ones are freaking?
Hullu: Thanks, I painted the vials from these small bottles in the still life closet. I see now they are really off ellipse and axis of symmetry wise. I am taking drawing classes at a community college so my observatory skills are getting refined a bit, so next time I go to paint them I will definitely make sure they look better. The models are painted in acrylics; and I will be doing nude figure drawing next week I hope as long as I dont get shafted by this 18+ rule.(im 16) Also I found a Loomis figure drawing book off the web so I am going to give it a go, porportions are ehh. Thanks.

Is it just me or did your art history thread disappear?
Thanks for all the comments in critiques guys it means alot. Ya they are all me, the mouth area is always hard for me because I am not really patient so I rush through the acrlyics not blocking in because I want to finish so damn bad, acrylics also take like 3 - 4 minutes to dry adding to the speed: and why i love acrylics. But I need to try out oils!!
Most of them are me, and the reason it seems like i was pouting is because I want to get more mood into my work somehow but I dont even really know what mood is.
And if I find time Ill try to update the art history thread I bet its in here somewhere and start on the baroque masters or dwelve deeper into N. R.

Your gesture drawings are my favorite. Thanks for taking the time to upload all of this artwork. It's nice to see the progression. I'll give you the advice that I try to give myself.... be humble, learn from everyone you can, practice as much as possible, and focus on the fundamentals - perspective, composition, anatomy, and values.
I recently ordered a magnificent perspective course - a set of 3 DVDs by one of the greatest art teachers out there, Marshall Vandruff. ( I was lucky enough to see this guy lecture in person, then bought the dvds). They are sort of pricey 130$, but WELL worth the money, if you can swing it. You may not believe it, but 12 hours of perspective lessons can actually be fun and refreshing with the right teacher - go figure. You can find all that here.. www.draw123.com

Bah.. no. just trying to be helpful.
Thanks, for all the replies and words of encouragement.
I take classes at my local community college and we just did perspective, its a really interesting topic. Usually when I want videos I'll ask around for them the last thing I do is buy anything, my library usually has old videos on basic techniques like perspective, painting in watercolors, acrylics and blah. But I'll definately look around for them, its just kind of hard putting down near 50 dollars on a dvd but it seems as if its worth it once you understand and practice the technique. My anatomy needs alot of work and refining but I hope to start taking figure drawing classes soon.
Right now I am working on getting oil painting videos and actual oil paint, its kind of hard because everyones technique in oil painting is kind of different really there is no right path.
Thanks!
art class.. final critique next week i think these are pretty guten

Sorry I am not so good with the camera and lighting for art so some of these are eh but these are screenprints inspired by Warhols narrative, mainly his portrait of ten jews. But I just did portraits of three people everyone probably knows just by looking at them. It got kind of sloppy but I LEARNED about printing seriously. I am putting them in the order that I did them so you can kind of see the progress.
The process is simply lay down ink then keep building on it. Mine didn't exactly turn out like Warhols but I am proud of the way they did turn out.

Bush
I was experimenting on how far I could take the ink, how it would react to a paint brush and etc.

Osama
This one didnt turn out too well but I only had 3 illustration boards so its not like I could trash it, but later on in the year when I get back to school and I have more supplies to do with I will definately redo Osama.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/arlando123/blair.jpg
Blair
This is the last one I did, I think its the best one the composition is ok the Bush one may be better and keep the views eyes moving but to me this one has the most mood and Blair looks like hes thinking about something.
Sculpture project:
This peice was somewhat inspired by Marisol but the more I dweleved into this more I started to dislike this type of sculpture, but I really enjoy Marisols work. My grandfather is a carpenter so we built this. Then i painted it and we put legs on it. I wanted to look kind of spooky and also like she was stepping into something like a new job or something kooky. Her hands are also behind her back showing this shyness to whatever shes going.

Closeup on face :

Got kind of sloppy but from far away it melts together so I think it works as an interesting effect.
Like I said I tried my best.

I think that Blair one would be awesome with just a white background. I don't quite get what those squares of colour are about or the shapes on them. Maybe if they covered the entire thing rather than just having a couple of em.

They are copying Warhols style the way he does his narrative, I would have made them bigger but I was scared of running out of ink.
Here are some of Warhols:

http://artdaily.com/imagenes/2005/02/14/za376.jpg
The difference between mine is warhol is a prtty large gap.
warhol had little workshop of people that would help him and better equipment.
i had to this in my room running back and forth
but if you ever get the chance to see any of warhols narrative in real life they are real eye candy

Some of your works are quite good. I like your self-portrait, for example. But, nevertheless I believe you should work some more on those proportions. When you practice proportions, don't hesitate to use some kind of measuring device in order to find out where you went wrong. When you get a wrong proportion, redo it. Either rub out what is wrong or redo the whole thing, until you get it right. When you can do the proportions, get on to the contrasts and practice depth.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to stop painting until you get the proportions and the contrasts right. You might occasionally make a nice painting, but the problem with the proportions and the contrast will keep reappearing.
What is your goal anyway? Are you 'just doing this for fun'? or do you want to become a fine/concept artist?
Don't loose courage! Keep working!
hey thanks for all the support guys it means alot to me when i read your responses to my artwork. the responses make me want to work harder, i havent sketched in forever but i am trying to get a local sketch group going...

This is how the proportion issue probably happens, I rush through my work sometimes /sketches because they are just sketches and not supposed to be mathematically correct. Or the work you saw may have been from 2 years ago, thats how old this collection has gotten. I am just a student so I dont have much time anymore to sit and study art and human people that besides books... which I will get printed out and then alas no time to read because of school. also the fact that I dont totally believe in having the perfect peice of proportion because everyones face is a little screwed up and it adds to emotion that i try to reciprocrate something like that. I will definately now however pay way more attention to proportion and try to get everything good and relative as it can get until it is second nature. I suck at depth too in most of my sketches but I took some art classes and I understand more about shadows now and etc.
I havent sketched in about 3 months so :( and I cannot just stop painting I have to paint to pass my art class, painting is fun anyway. But I agree with you you cannot write if you can't read.
I do art just because.. I mean why do we breathe, why do people become doctors lawyers and indian chiefs? I think art came to me like this, most of my art teachers in elementary school saw something in me (except one teacher who never really put much attention towards my artwork ) I dont know why but they were always trying to push me into the art path but I maintained a seemingly consistant interests in the art in middle school where I was formally introduced to creativty and 3d construction my art teacher pushed me and she told me I would be great and she gave me alot of art supplies and told me to draw draw draw and then. now in highschool i just like to draw and do wahtevrr I feel that it is so much freedom through art and expression it turns me on all the time so I dunno.
but right now I am frustrated I am working on an acrylic painting with the statue of liberty and I cannot get the colors right so I thinking about crying and possibly pulling an all nighter until I stich this bitch i hope i hallucinate and picasso comes down from heaven or w/e and shows me how to paint that would make me cream myself
