Post what you think is the best riff ever in the history of popular music.
I think Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple is an obvious one, so what else?
My favourite is Le Grange by ZZ Top.

Smoke on the Water is awful - it sounds like someone coughing something up.

But yeah i agree - Hendrix songs have good riffs.

Dream Theater - Stream of Consioucness

I don't really listen to Dream Theater because of the singer (I can't stand his voice!) but some of the riffs are pretty good.

Some of AC/DC's riffs are unforgettable, like Highway to Hell or Thunderstruck. Cream - Sunshine of your love also has a good riff.

Heartbreaker-Led Zeppelin

I'm surprised no one else has even mentioned ONE other Led Zeppeling song. Any of their songs could be number one. While I'm at it, I'd put Layla by Clapton at number 2.

Well, Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin is definitely worth a mention.

Warning Floyd is my fav band so some of them are kind of biased but I truly think they are some of the greatest riffs ever without any bias. I dont like crazy train that much but I admit its a great riff. Not a big metallica fan but once again from a technical standpoint they are some of the best riffs i have heard...just like floyds (from a technical stand point floyds riff's are just as amazing).

Blue Oyster Cult-Godzilla

Ozzy Osbourne-Crazy Train

Pink Floyd-Money

Led Zepplin-Stairway

Queen-Another one Bites the Dust

Van Halen-Humans Being

Guns n Roses-Sweet Child o Mine

James Brown-Play that Funky Music White Boy

AC/DC-Back In Black

Pink Floyd- Speak To Me/Breathe

Pink Floyd- Another Brick in The Wall

Pink Floyd- Hey You

Pink Floyd- Is there Anybody Out there (guitar riff after lyrics)

Metallica- For Whom the Bell Tolls

Metallica- The Unforgiven

Metallica- Nothing Else Matters

oh yeah Tom Morello what a king. Let me think, born of a broken man, sleep now in the fire, calm like a bomb, killing in the name of (simple yet so popular). More good songs with rifts there, but i'm sure there better.

Oh, thought of my new #1: Have Love Will Travel by the Black Keys. I know it's a cover, but they play it so much better. Oh man...the beginning of that song gives me goosebumps.

Yes, led zeplin songs DEFINATELY have some of the best riffs, particularly Black Dog. Did you know that Jimmy Page would write three or more riffs for a song before he found the one that sounded best? That's prolly why all their songs rock.

I'm finding myself obsessed with Vader - The Nomad right now, along with Xeper. Simple riffs but if they aren't the most headbangable things ever made then I'll be damned. Of course, the classic Led Zep stuff is always awesome too, and Maiden and Sabbath have their fair share of great riffs, though I really don't like Iron Man that much, but that's probably because I've heard it a billion times.

Wow. I cannot believe that no one has mentioned Slayer's Raining Blood. This song has easily the most incredibly ominous and metal-sounding riff ever heard. Hundreds of bands have tried to rip-off that progression, but none have succeeded. Best. Riff. Ever.

While on the subject of Vader, Vader's cover of Raining Blood is excellent. They played it live the other week in Birmingham. ;D I was shocked.

I agree with most of the above suggestions, but I would also like to add that while it's not necessarily hard rock or metal (and therefore generally riff-less), Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie is tEh_4w350m3n355.
