:o Since i haved change my mobo and reformatted, i can't use the heapsize trick anymore. Whatever the value i enter in the launch option (in my case
-heapsize 512000) when i start the console it shows Heap: 250mb!!!????
I have 1 G ram, p5gd1 Asus, P IV 3 mghz, x800xl (256M)Ati.
The part before the horse when we have to fight the Striders and Combines shoots from everywhere, it can drop down to 39 fps.

I would be happy to have 39 frames...

Sorry ... I meant it's more like 24 to 29 fps but only from certains angles cause the rest of the time it's not so bad like around 75 for exteriors scenes and over 120 in tunnels so i capped it at 60 fps (like Doom3 default).
BTW what about that heapsize problem?
Sorry for my english...i am a frog (French Canadian) LOL!!

Having 256 more heap size won't help you get more FPS. You already have 256 which is plenty.

Hmmm what about .cfg files? They could be set to read only
I don't know, I've not done anything technical with HL2 in ages :/

This command tells Half Life 2 to allocate more RAM to the game system heap, where it can be accessed by the game to improve performance by storing more game information in RAM and hence reducing loading pauses. The default heapsize is 64MB, however you can safely allocate around 128MB (i.e. -heapsize 128000) for most systems. You can use higher values if you have more RAM, but I don't recommend exceeding half your physical RAM (e.g. for 1GB RAM, set heapsize of 512000).

i had this prob too,i have a gig of ram but it wouldnt go above 250mb, if i set it to 50000 it would set it to 50mb, no i didnt type it in wrong, i eventually got it to 500mb by, i think, turning hyper threading on in my bios, all it did was decrease loading times tbh, no fps improvement
