View Full Version : MaxiKana's Photographs
In a strive to try to rival Fenders' photos I had to make my own thread :p
The first pics are taken with my old Fuji S5000 and the last few pics with my new Canon EOS 350D. I'm still a noob at taking pictures so don't critisize me too hard :p

btw im interested in photography, for my b/day i plan on asking for a digital camera, can you recommend one?:)
your one i suppose:o
Yes! :D
But don't get Fuji, their cameras compress their JPEGs heavily :( or HP.
Get Canon, if you don't want to spend lots of money go for the Ixus series.

Loving the dog ones, hillarious! I bet you wanted to give it that little push off the rock ;)

No fair!! You've got a better camera!!!! Honestly though, I can see you do have the eye for photography. A lot of my photos have just been snapshots lately, nothing really frame worthy. The colors in those pics are just awesome.

Ooo a reply from the master :P Thanks for the compliments :)
Yeah, my camera is a bit better, but I have to buy lenses :(
It's 8mp, has the same processor as the 1Ds Mk II ;) and some other stuff.
They are all heavily post processed and all except the last two were taken with my older camera, the Fuji. It's only 3.1 MP.
But you should remember that those pics are mostly from last summer :p not all in one weekend.
More pictures that I took today, all taken with my eos 350D:

no idea why but my fave pic there was the elevator button. I just don't know why, maybe I'm a sucker for flashy lights and blurring :)
Actually it's not an elevator button. It's a button that open the doors to the "garage" where the buss waits, at the newly opened buss terminal at Kamppi, Helsinki.

Very nice. Polarising filters pwn j00. It's a shame the silhouette of the trees isn't absolute, but it's still a fantastic picture; much post-processing?
You've really taken advantage of the shape of the bank there, great composition.
Wow, I must take better pictures while drunk :p That was at 2 am after twelve beers O.o.
Anyway. Was taken without filters :P Don't have any... yet...
And you've guessed it, It's post processed. The colors aren't that good in the original, and the original isn't that dark.

It's a nice concept, and the colours are excellent, but it doesn't sit well in the frame. The horizon level is fine, but the sun is just offcentre- considering you went to the trouble of framing the photo, I'd say it's intentional, but correct me if I'm wrong- and this puts the image off balance, as your eye is constantly comparing both right and left sides. Centering the sun or using a more traditional 3rds displacement would probably be more satisfying.
It's still beautiful though, keep 'em coming :)

I know nothing about cameras, but i was thinking about something in pictures (drawing, painting, pictures, ect.) as a hobby, I like the fact that with pictures, you can take a picture of something really boring and when the picture is made it looks awesome, I mean like the elevator button, something totally boring in real life but in a picture it looks visually stunning, keep up the good werk!
Oh, I am getting a PSP with the camera attachment, and i was wondering (if you knew) is it a good camera? For taking pictures like yours?

Maxi you are quite a photographer aren't you? In regards to the last shot of the Angkor Wat, I believe you should have taken a similar horizontal shot with the middle tower in the background slightly to the side of the monk's head.
Question for you regarding the pictures on your first post. Did you use color filters or did you do all the color editing using software?

If you really want to go professional with photography, go to a school. You'll learn that professional photography has much more to it than just a digital consumer camera. The shots look nice, yeah, but to me the pictures you shot really are not that interesting. It has all been done before a million times.
I am not trying to bash here, but giving tips. I am just saying that if you want to take photography to professional levels, go see exhibitions of some, go to open door days of art schools, and take class. It'll really make a difference, I promise.

Love the third one of the monk or whatever he is. Don't people mind you running up and taking pictures of them?

Amazing.
Thank you all! =) Glad I didn't buy my camera in vein.

As much as I appreciate your comment I'd like to point out that I don't have a "digital consumer camera", and I've only been shooting seriously for about a year and a half. And Photography is much more than just photography, especially when being a pro. You need to know how to market yourself, you need to know pricing, tax and budgeting. Granted, taking a class in photography probably wouldn't do harm I don't want to go to an art school and become an art photographer churning out the same kind of photography as all the other photography students I know do. Besides, since I've already been published, I can't be doing things totally wrong, can I?

Well, I fully agree that getting published is a nice feature, and knowing about the market is a good thing. But I am really trying to determine what you want to do in photography. Photography as art or for commercial purposes? Or a combination? Not an unimportant question...
Do not underestimate the power of art school: it is far from simply churning out the same as others. It is quite the opposite... It is supposed to get the creativity flowing, thinking about unique, inspiring concepts, shooting series. I ahve not yet seen you shoot series, just technical shots that have no real content. I miss stories in your photographs. I know it is just my opinion...
Also, the Canon EOS 350D (or 400D), and a Fuji Finepix are still consumer digital cameras, no matter how you put it. EOS cameras are defenately not bad (I own two myself; 300V, 300D), but professional photography to me still is film. TC. Hasselblad. dark room developing, etc.
I am not saying you are doing things wrong, I am just giving you another vision on photography, perhaps it can help you in your aims.

You're incorrect in saying that professional photography is film, or even 'pro' digital. The market changed with the advent of consumer DSLR's, and I'll be damned if it takes a Canon 1Ds and thousands of pounds worth of 'L' glass to be considered 'professional' - that's the antithesis of what 'art' is, and on a more practical note, hundreds of publications use prints from d70, d100, 350d cameras, hell, I know of more than a couple of coffee table books shot entirely with a d70 - 'those second bodies' see an awful lot of use. Just because the newer DSLRs fall into a reasonable price range doesn't mean they're somehow discredited as 'prosumer' or 'consumer' models - all of them are now leaps and bounds ahead of the Canon D30, which did a modest 3MP at 3fps, and sold for three thousand dollars!
The pro vs consumer SLR and film vs. digital debates are to me just rehashes of the struggles everyone watches the audio industry go through, with the same predictable conclusions - it's about how you use the equipment you have. Consider the limited importance of the camera body in the composition of the shot in all but the most extreme conditions (extreme high ISO, motordrive-speed capture for sports, extensive flash configurations).
Besides, put your money where your mouth is, and post some photos :D I seriously reckon there should be a 'gallery' thread in here or something, I love seeing people's work

I can agree with two things: yes, it is all about how you use your equipment, and that it matters not how expensive that is, as long as it suits your needs.
I highly disagree, though, that film is of no importance to go pro: both in film and photography film still is the dominant carrier, and there are good reasons for that. I am not against the digital revolution; on the contrary; I love it.

I'm not saying film is/isn't important - I'm stressing it being one of two equally viable methods of taking pictures :)
At least, over/up here film is dead. When I've been to concerts people shoot digital, magazines use digital, papers use digital. Only people who don't use digital are the ones using MF or LF and can't afford the 30.000€+ price tag associated with a good quality MF or LF back. 35mm Digital is superior to 35mm film. And saying EOS cameras aren't professional is wrong. Okay the xxxD series isn't, but I met a photographer shooting a gig for the largest commercial radio station in Finland and he was using a 20D and a 70-300 DO IS...
And I do know what I'm doing.
I want to see your last awesome pictures that everyone was talking about in the previous page D: D: D:
You don't see it? D: It should be there.

great photos, you have a great eye for taking in the right moment. i'd like to see more unusual angles/exposures too, some photos are too documentary so to speak.
i really haven't appreciated your stuff as much as I do now, but i've gone into photo myself and have a friend who's pretty much a brilliant artsy photographer who's taught me a bit
Thanks guys!
Just as a sort of report thing, I just(two weeks ago) bought a 40D, and with 10 days left of the army, I should start posting photos more often!

Why I can't see the pics??
Sorry, I've had to delete them from the FTP they were on, since it got full and it isn't for my photos. But do not worry, I will very soon get a site of my own. So until then you'll have to do with my deviantart. http://maxikana.deviantart.com/gallery
Right then... some updates.
I've kind of stopped taking arty shots and have concentrated on photojournalism. Taking photos for student magazines, friends and stuff. Currently having a friend of mine who is a web designer help me to create a webpage for me and when that's done it's time to start an toiminimi (I think thats an LLC in the US? ) and start photography as a freelance PJ. I've done a few "mugshots" for a magazine so just to help future buisness I thought I'd start an LLC.
Oh, and here are some shots.
