CPU question

well hello there guys and gals, I just purchased a new cpu and I want to put my old cpu in my old computer, now...what will happen if the cpu overheats/not compatible/dosent work will it just melt ? damaging all the other components ? or will it just go and not work, sorry but its hard to explain :D

what proc. what mobo. . what kind of comp.. more info more info more info more info more info.... it will probably work/be much easier to transfer the ram/harddrive/diskdrives to the other computer..then to try and switch processors w/ a mobo that might not be compatible.
