Could someone explain to me what the hell these are, and how they fit into Aftermath?

BrimStone04

i dont think anyone quite knows how they fit into aftermath, as no one has played it :)
but according to the "raising the bar" they were cut from the game, but they left the head of one in the green jar in Eli's lab, it will be interesting to see how/if they do fit into aftermath

IIRC, they were basically walking flamethrowers that clean up... hang on let me get the book..

"The Cremator, a Combine janitor of sorts, was to wield a large spary hose that dissolved organic matter from the streets of City 17 after unrest had been squelched. A Cremator head can be seen in a jar of formaldahyde in Eli's lab."

They modelled it and gave it animations but it never actually fit into the game. But due to the fact its in Eli's lab, i wouldn't be suprised if they were put in Aftermath. But don't build your hopes up.

It'd be cool if you finish a major battle, or something, and you come back to that spot later in the game to find the cremators doing their thing

Maybe the cremoes are only sent in when the Xen animals invade City 17?

The Cremator, a Combine janitor of sorts, was to wield a large spray hose that dissolved organic matter from the streets of City 17 after unrest had been squelched. A Cremator head can be seen in the jar of formaldehyde in Eli's lab.That's the official word on it.

And as for the things we've seen in the Aftermath screenshots:"I thought the Stalker was a great monster; it was this kind of nullified amputated human that the Combine turned into a slave laborer. They rip out all the organs and run them on saline solution so they are easier to maintain. The Stalker idea came from wanting something that crept around the shadows and then lunged at you. We took a half-baked idea and turned it into something more horrific because the Stalkers are really the victims. When you face them, they are these crazed half-human things that you can't help but almost pity. I was hoping to put enough humanity into the things that it wasn't just a scary monster. Instead it was something that presented a moral dilemma every time you had to deal with it, which I think is a more interesting problme. It is more horrific to have to deal with an insane hostage than something that just wants to eat your brains."

Yeah, they strike me as creepy exterminators as well as "cleaners". Glad the janitors I know don't weild fiery/acid chem sprays...

I'm really starting to wonder what's going to be in Aftermath. I'm actually vaguely excited, so woo!

the people they hire to clean the bathrooms here at my college often have to use chemical spray after weekends to breakdown biological matter, since nobody wants to clean up another person's puke, semen, blood etc . . . and the spray they use is some acid spray. My roomate asked if he could slip in slide in there and they told him it would eat through his shirt and skin too fast

Do they wear a trench coat?

Reginald
29-04-2005, 07:56 PM
If they don't include it, I will be very dissapointed. I think they will though. There has just been a huge Resistance uprising, and I imagine plenty were killed. Time to get the Cremators out and clean up that mess, and stop AntiCitizen One. I imagine the weapon being something along the lines of the huge armoured bugs in Starship Troopers, powered down of course.

On a slightly off-topic note: If they modelled it, does that mean it could be made into a ragdoll for Gmod? Or if it also included animations, be used in a mod by someone else?

Yeh, Combine Synths in Trenchcoats with an acid spray that dissolves people.

How did the concept fail again?

From shareddefs.h

#define DMG_PHYSGUN (1<<23) // Hit by manipulator. Usually doesn't do any damage.
#define DMG_PLASMA (1<<24) // Shot by Cremator
#define DMG_AIRBOAT (1<<25) // Hit by the airboat's gun

I dont really see a need for the cremator in aftermath.

The aim of the cremator was to keep the streets clean - if the city is in chaos the cremator has no real job because they'd be totally out numbered now.

I would like to see them in it though.

a Combine Synth in a trenchcoat with an plasma spraying "hose".

They patrolled the streets after resistance had been quelled disolving organic matter with there "hoses". The water and lack of bodies would make the people forget they had ever risen up.

Random useless piece of cremator trivia: in the E3 2004 videos, the "cremator head in formaldhyde" is in fact not: in the same place on the desk, a single Cremator head is placed on the desk. No jar.

Why was the cremator cut? IMO, the model that we've seen of it just simply isn't up to scratch. I think part of the problem was always the trenchcoat. Many of the best concepts in Raising the Bar had combine units in Trench Coats; they were going for a sort of Facist police look for the Cremator and Combine Guard in particular. All units with trenchcoats, or something comparable (perhaps even long hair counts) were cut. I just think Valve came up against a wall: they took a look at this wonderfully graphically advanced game they were making and realised: flowing coats aren't going to work until we have the technology to make them. The trenchcoat in the google shot of the model is barely a few steps along from the Trenchcoats of the Denton brothers in Deus Ex.

When game engines can accurately simulate flowing materials like clothes, perhaps we'll see the Cremator. My guess is that - baring a redesign (i.e. losing the coat), we will not see the Cremator in Aftermath.

freaky, stalker related?It looks cool, but I don't think it fits with the overall HL2 aesthetic. It's a bit too raggedy. Not that that's a bad thing, mind; reminds me of Tim Burton's stuff :)

I was hoping for maybe a different model. Same head, stalker body with perhaps combine insignia and weapons on both arms.

Although, does it really need to flow? It looks pretty tighly wrapped...

My guess is that - baring a redesign (i.e. losing the coat), we will not see the Cremator in Aftermath.Doesn't have to PROPERLY simulate it. Splinter Cell had cloth that swayed in the breeze and covered you as you went through them (if you see what I mean). Even Vice City gave the impression of rippling clothes in the wind on bikes - that's all you really need to do is give the impression.
I don't really like the bulbous sack that its legs poke out of - a properly tight trench-coat style outfit (no feet showing?) would look a lot better.
My opinion is law.

i would have thought the cremators would have a very shambling appearence, as if it is not entirely well built. this could be reflected in its movement, like it would kill for a zimmerframe. Its not as if the combine are going to put many funds into these disposable cleaners.

I just noticed something in RtB... the things the kids are making in the Child Factories (a section cut from the game for all of you not in the know) are Cremator helmets. This leads me to believe that they are infact Stalkers with costumes on. Which also leads me to believe they will be included as a Stalker variation in Aftermath.

Flyingdebris
12-05-2005, 05:44 AM
i think the cremator would be an interesting enemy to fight.

The way i see it, it would be the kind of creature that you would stumble across rather than actively fight.

Like lets say you are going through some sewer areas and some cremators are going around melting down corpses, they notice you and they attack.

they probably wouldn't be like regular combine troops that are always after you, more like dumb creatures that fight you because you are are interfereing with their task

For a good idea of how the weapon will act, watch Starship Troopers and look at the huge armoured bugs magical saliva stuff. I can picture it being like that. What do people think about stealing the weapon? Judging by the concepts it actually looks like a holding onto weapon rather than a biological weapon. It would be freakin sweet.

Jeez, can't you people see what a good enemy this would be? He's got a hose that dissolves organic matter (ie human flesh). You'd have to fight your way down a street full of them, dodging sprays of the hoses. I think it would be awesome.

EDIT: Jebus, imagine if you could get your hands on one of those hoses! I mean, lighting people on fire in HL2 was fun but it can't compare to hosing someone down with sprays of acid.

marneus-calgar

I dont think they would add them in as weapons for you to have. that would be too hard to control the game, and to have a good storyline they need to control it.

It would be cool as an enemy though.

And just to add extra awesome to this ressurected thread, the hose doesn't dissolve matter, but ignites it. The code's still in the SDK for the weapon, and it's mighty fun tyo use, even though it only works when you shoot at the ground rather than directly at the enemy.
