the russian STALKER website (http://stalker.igromania.ru/) now has a counter that ends on Dec 1st 2005 ...this has to be the release date. I'm glad we finally have some confirmation (which I correctly guessed a few months back) but it's just so far away ..this was my must have game of 2004

Well thats good and bad news really.
Good to have a final(one hopes) release date , but dec?!

I would guess they are going over all the old(dx8) art assets , remaking them for dx9.
Seeing as the whole game was conceived with dx8 in mind and the sheer number of models and textures in the game world, that task alone could whole man(person)-years, and without that kind of graphic overhaul the game would sink like a stone.

actually i reckon it looks great both esthetically and technicaly, i dont see anything wrong with it... sure, maybe it wont compete with the other games out by then but very few games have such a good style as stalkers, we will see...

That timer is in no way official.
The date given by THQ a few weeks ago was October, that's why some of the major retailers has changed their estimates to October, for example EBGames.

I had some contacts with him after I first contacted Anton via the official website, some guy with the nick Sniper-X was running around saying he knew more than anyone about the game, then Oleg contacted me requesting links, so I gave it to him, sadly he said he couldn't confirm it at that current time so still hasn't heard anything about THAT.
I believe that guy was lying tho, he has stated that he has access to the UE3 while in fact IIRC he's 17/18 and still studying.
And for the second, if he knew so much about STALKER he'd most likely be breaking an NDA with GSC and THQ by revealing info about it that "no-one else" had access too.

Anyway, sent the email now, if he's as quick as he's been before I might recieve an reply in a few hours, I'll post it here as soon as I get it.

There are some videos around from a games expo last year, they show a dx9 version of the engine, and they are stunning.
Completely different to the previous images and videos of the game(and better than the shots released this week).
In fact they have almost the same level of detail and dynamic light/shadow as doom3, with heat haze shaders amongst other effects.
So far, all that has been seen are vids and screens of inside/underground locations in dx9 mode, the company are promising a dx9 overhaul of all the games locations ,inside and out.
That will take some work but if they manage it, it should blow all previous impressions of the game out of the water.

I've had a 9800 Pro for like 2/2.5 years and I haven't dropped to medium yet. You definitely got a few years left on your card. I'm gonna squeeze 1-2 more years out of mine.

I also have a 9800Pro, has done great for me, I can run FEAR(The MP Beta) with everything maxed(including AA etc) except the res which I drop down to 640x480, but then it still looks great and run at a decent FPS...

If the graphics looked like they were two years old and they delivered on everything else, I'd be very happy and I'd get this game in a heartbeat. If the graphics were perfect and better than any other game ever, but they screwed up everything else up, I wouldn't buy it.

That would be nice if they released it in Oct. I don't know what to believe now.

You shall be waiting at least six months yet.

The devs have said that they plan a six month advertising program for the game, which will finish with the release. Therefore, when they start advertising again you can predict six months to release. If we assume that the advertising program will begin with E3, late November early December.

(rumours say September, though expect December in my opinon).
