Valve listens to their fans and there has been about hundreds of polls where is asked about the next hero of an expansion or game, and Adrian Shepard has won every single one of them. Besides the anti-Shepard movement is too small. There is more Adrian-fans here. So I say that we will see Adrian again.

I don't see how anyone can really be pro or anti Shepard.

He's exactly like Gordon, he doesn't, talk and has no real character. He observes the plot of Opposing Force in exactly the same way that Gordon observes the plot of HL, i.e. watching, but not actively moving it forward through any kind of personal character development. YOU'RE supposed to be the character.

That's what make the HL games so special. They don't artificially pollute the experience by forcing an artificial character's dialog or actions on you, the player. It doesn't matter WHO you play as, its the experience that counts. Adrian Shepard is a pair of hands that holds guns. Nothing more, nothing less. Indeed, I think you're reffered to by name (Adrian Shepard) maybe twice the entire game! So can anyone really tell me what the love or hate about the Shepard character exactly? What character is there to have an opinion about?

Is it the awesome hand models? The speed at which he walks? Perhaps it's the fact that he fights an arbitrary race of aliens that neither fit into the HL universe, or make much sense on their own?

Did you not pay attention to the ending of Op4 at all? The entire reason Shephard was detained was due to the Gman NOT wanting to kill him.

Both characters have to go through hell at black mesa and somehow end up in one of the gman's freaky speeches. A shephard expansion for hl2 as another pov would work best.

Gordon's suit was designed for combat due to the harsh conditions in xen faced by scientist exploration teams.. and if it were not Gordon would be on the ground dead in one shot. Shephard's suit was a powered combat vest, not a normal bullet proof vest, if that's not futuristic I don't know what is..

I see no reason why he doesn't fit into the story line. The only thing I disregard from Op4 is the Race-X, which I write off as a race drawn to Earth in the Cascade, but plays no role other then cannon fodder.

The Black Ops, the nuking of Black Mesa, and detainment of Shephard; I regard those as facts.

Race-x is simply a small 3rd party that doesn't mean really anything to the overarching plot of half-life.. they just try to take blackmesa and fail horribly, so they retreat and go about their own business on xen or whatever dimension they live.

It's too difficult to figure out what would happen if Shephard was to return. His story is at a dead end.

hell, i played through op4, and assuming i never played the original halflfe i would have never thought there were ever any orders to mow down the civvies. Being grateful to the scientists for saving my ass, i did not waste them.

The idea i got from playing op4 was that Gordon Freeman is some sort mysterious figure that is always one step ahead of you and somehow involved with this disaster... You don't really have much reason to feel hatred towards him cause as i recall you never really hear that he's been killing your fellow marines. You just hear everyone mention that they are looking for him

The scientists were afterall, responsible for everything that happened to him since he entered Black Mesa. I imagine he won't be too happy once he realizes that everyone he cares about is pretty much dead, thanks to the Combine. He would then logically take out his frustration on people like Freeman and Kliener.

But it could even go the other way, with Shephard feeling that this is all his fault for not succeeding in his mission, and therefore ally with his enemies from Black Mesa.

There's just too many options.

Just curious... are the rest of the "anti-shepherds" just feigning hatred of the character because it's funny to watch some of the "pro" crowd getting worked up about it? I find it so difficult to have any reaction to such a vapourous character... what do I have to work with here? A dislike of his Gun-Arms and Green Hud... because that pretty much IS Adrian Shepherd! :D

Oh and Shepherd back for an expansion pack? With the next expansion from Gordon's POV and the age old rumours of key Valve members who'd "like to do an Alyx / Dog expansion", you should be so *insert early 90s Kylie hit here*

Shepherds are evil. Death to the Shepherds! Remember the bible? The baby jesus was born and 3 wise men came bearing gifts. Then the Shepherds came and what did they bring? Nothing! Just the foul stench of their evil occupation! Adrian Shepherd is a direct descendent of these terrible men. Why did the G-Man detain him? It's because now the Black Mesa incident was over, he didn't want Shepherd to disappear and follow the family tradition of herding sheep. That's what Adrian would have done... found some pasture and enslaved cute little lambs and make them grow wool for him! The G-Man is a great sympathiser of the enslaved. In fact, a cousin of a friend of a cousin's friend's daughter's wife's grandmother knows someone who works as a mild mannered janitor in the office below Valve's postmaster HQ. And this man (let's call him Mr Phooey) says that HL3 will all be about Shepherd enslaving a master race of sheep 20,000 years in the future. Get it? First it was the Vortiguant, then it was the Human Race and next it'll be the Sheep! And the Sheep overlords will all carry Shepherd's crooks and command massive biomechanical sheepdogs to herd the oppressed wooly masses though the gates of Pasture 17! And into this bleak arena steps Gordon Freeman and his Sheep-Pig sidekick Babe, who disguises himself as a Sheep-Dog. And then there'll be these special zombie like Sheep that have been infected by space squid. And these squeep can only be pacified by playing Culture Club records. So the new version of the gravity gun is upgraded by the G-Man to play such hits as "Do you really want to hurt me?" and "Karma Chameleon" and then the sheep stop attacking. Kind of like the Biozeminades in Half-Life 2 were going to do before the government came round Valve's offices and told them to not reveal the truth about the Biozeminades. They gave them a new water-cooler but it fell over and cracked when they let out the baby garg to search for the code leak (when they found it, they taped it up with sellotape). So anyway, yeah Shepherd is evil and he shouldn't come back as a playable character because he'll be an enemy with laser eyes and an amusing twist on Mr Friendly. kthx bye.

Eh, personally, I think both sides are being silly here. (Although I think the anti-shephard people are being the most silly; why they would want to limit their possible options for future expansions is beyond me.) Seriously; we've been told that there's an HL2 expansion being made and you guys want to argue for and against a character that isn't even going to be featured in it? :rolleyes:

If there WAS to be an expansion done with Shephard, I would perfer Gearbox to make it. (And I doubt Gearbox is going to go back to working on other people's IP's now that they have put out their own successful franchise...) Anything Valve does should be focus'd on Freeman, IMO. Leave other characters to other companies.

That said, I would love nice, boxed retail expansion or two to go along with the intended ongoing serial that Valve is releasing through Steam. The more content the better, IMO. :D
