View Full Version : Boris Karloff (quick sketch)
The Dark Elf

Quick sketch of Boris Karloff (one of my favorite actors of all time) I'm not entirely happy with it though, but the only reference image I could find was too low res and horrid to work from.

Thanks :)
Only used Photoshop using a default brush. Added grain and a little diffuse glow and colorised it just a tad.

Oh, this is entirely made in PS? That's even harder I suppose :O don't you usually paint pictures in 'real'?

Yuppers, all in Photoshop 7. I used to paint traditionally, but don't have the time anymore, and there's so much setting up and cost to go with it that I pretty much wont unless its paid work, and even then I'd probably not be too thrilled, I miss it, but I don't miss all the annoying things that went with it, which I don't have using a tablet and PC.

hehe well he did play the original Frankenstein so thats pretty close to a politician :) But in real life he was apparantly a really gentle person. Brilliant actor though, always worth watching.

if you look at this picture in detail it looks very very simple, but in other ways it looks very realistic too. Its not just this one ive seen other and they look so easy to do but it isnt :(

Now do Bela Lugosi!
I plan on doing properly (once I find decent enough references to work from)
Boris Karloff
Bela Lugosi
Vincent Price
Christopher Lee
Peter Cushing
Peter Lorre
hopefully all looking like oil paintings and done in Painter IX, then maybe put them all together in one large image.

That's very, very cool :D
He (to me) bears a striking resemblance to Jeremy Irons. Thought I'd say that for no particular reason.

*looks at a pic of the other guy.. hmm your right, he does look a lot like Jeremy Irons. well, not like him, but seems to have the same look about him.. hmm yeah i know what you mean, dunno how to explain it though hehe.
All time favorites I reckon those are, so if anyone has any plans on buying me anything for my birthday, movies with any or all of those in will be fine by me :E
Awesome! I look forward to all of them! Especially Vincent Price!
I'm not sure which to do for Vincent. Him younger or older.

Wow, Elf. I guess you have the muscle to back up all of that criticism you give eveyone else. :)

NICE. Vincent Price'll be AWESOME. Maybe a pic at this age... complete with cigarette?

And Christopher Lee will be cool as shit as well.

I think I see what you're going for. That particular picture, while unflattering, would make for a decent sketch.
[EDIT: Uncopiable link.]
This one's not too shabby... his facial expression probably isn't as drastic as you seem to be going for, but the smoke and cloak complement his almost sad face.

Something like this might be neat... complete with woman. She would need to be a little closer, though, if your intent is focusing on his face. That certainly is an interesting angle, though.

the one with the woman would look good when considering the possibility of putting them all together in a single image at some point, him and her in the middle and the others as just headshots around the sides. maybe throw in the mummy and frankenstein etc. too.

I only noticed his right eye isn't as detailed as the reference, but that could easily be sorted... right? And it still looks amazing!
