This is not a personal taste poll. Please vote on which band/musician you think is the most influential of all time. What group has had the most impact on music and popular culture

I have to say The Beatles; they pretty much set the template for almost all popular music since, really. :)

all the ones that came before them perhaps? :P
edit: i voted for the beatles too
The Beatles are the most influential band in history, period. They showed the world that rock could be deep, complex, and meaningful. Their introduction of new instruments into their songs also helped diversify the genre greatly and displayed that there wasn't any one way to play rock. Almost every sub-genre of music owes something to them, despite they were only recording for about six years.
Elvis, Led Zeppelin and Chuck Berry come in second.

I personally think that Nirvana had one fo the greatest impacts on music, NOT influential for future bands, but stopping the flood of pop and rap "music" for a while. Now Green Day are doing the same job...almost...
To me, the most influential musician on everyday life is Elvis Presley, who helped define music. The most influential musicians on other musicians, I would say are The Beatles (who basically created Rock) and Led Zep (who basically created Metal).

I voted for elvis, he set the stage for all of our music, and challenged the ideas of what is and what is not acceptable.

I'd say Frank Zappa because he will be more influential than the Beetles. I've found that you either Love Zappa, Hate Zappa, Love the Beetles or Hate Everyone and like Slipknot. I've been musically brought up by Zappa, and when I hear a Beetles song, I just think they are rather lame (musically speaking) in comparison. The Beetles were listenable to many people, but Zappa's music has that kind of 'hardness' about it that was found by the audience to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Varese's Deserts. So I think that Zappa will influence the next great muzischnins. I suppose Zappa's work requires a bit more thought to be understood.

If there was a thread like this about Heavy Metal, Steppenwolf should win, after all they did coin the phrase with the line "heavy metal thunder". There's an idea...

I'd say you just needed to listen to more Beatles, or at least look into something about what a phenomenon they were in the sixties and seventies. At least until you can spell their name. :D
Personally I'd give Bob Dylan a close second to the Beatles. While the Beatles crafted what we see as popular music, Dylan did the same for the counter-culture. His influence has shown in everything from style to politics.

I voted for the Beatles because it's pretty obvious...

About the spelling, my bad :o *Shows Arse in Public*. I dont like listening to the Beatles. There is only one song of theirs I like and its Eleanor Rigby (I think it is anyway - the one where it starts with "Look at the lovely people" or sumping like that)

All the others have had minor influence on culture - it's gotta be the Beatles!

Has to be the Beatles. There are other bands I prefer - but none have had nearly as much impact on the music we listen to today.

Good polls are the ones where you try and vote for every option at least 5 times, then scream in frustration and go and listen to a rolling stones album, this is a very good poll.
except for U2 BLEEEEH

The Beatles, very influential and fantastic music. Cant think of anything else like Beatlemania. Micheal Jackson at his peak is the only one that even comes anywhere NEAR the popularity aspect of the Beatles. There was some program on recently rating songs by their singles sales or something like that, Beatles were second, Elvis was third. Cliff Richard was first. :| Someone shoot that man.
Also, Bill Baileys skit at U2 pretty much sums them up. Or "The Edge" anyway.

thank the lord cliff richard is almost unheard of across the pond ...although I've heard some of his "music"
in a brit poll a few years back of the most influential musicians the top 3 were:
David Bowie
Beatles
U2

what's your fave stones era? personally I prefer the Mick Jones/richards era: Exiles on Mainstreet, Goat Heads soup etc
Get your YA YA's out is by far the best Live album of all time (although the Who's Live at leeds comes close) and it was recorded in a little seedy bar in my hometown after richards was busted for herione

Yeah Exile on main street has to be the album that's spinning the most here, though sticky fingers and beggars banquet come close

ya I like all the classics but I've been listening to them for years ...so every now and then I like to dig up songs that arent played on the radio all that often: Sister Morphene, Star Star, dead flower etc
agghhh I just realised I made a huge mistake ...Mick Jones is from the clash, I meant Mick Taylor
