Topic #1: The female body

The purpose of this thread is for members to display any sketches they have drawn of the female body here, for everyone to see. If you have a piece of work you wish to present, or simply want to comment on another member’s work- please stick to these simple rules.

Rules

You may post comments of other people’s work here, but please make it helpful criticism rather than pointless remarks (such as “that’s great”).

The work you display must be of a certain quality. This means no 30 second doodles or amusing stick men- your work must be at least a simple drawing. Although please note that despite the fact that artwork is referred to as “sketches”, you may post complex masterpieces if you wish.

Display all your work in one post, unless you want to show a decent sketch and you cannot edit your last post. This means that if you are drawing a series of sketches, you should wait until you have completed them all to make a post, rather than make a new post every time you complete a drawing. This is regarded as spam.

All of the sketches must be your own work! If you wish to show some artwork that has inspired you or may help others, you may do so- but only if you clearly state that it is not your work.

--------------------------

Topic related rules:

You are allowed to post nude sketches, but ONLY if you display a warning first. Do not use tags for nude drawings.

Example

I drew this picture this morning. It is of a manga woman leaning against a wall. The clothes were inspired by misato (http://www.noos.org/anime/evangelion/misato/misato1.jpg) from evangelion J

Helpful information

If you are having trouble drawing the female figure, How to draw manga (http://www.howtodrawmanga.com/tutorial/tutorial.html) have a great tutorial. Even if you don’t like drawing manga, the tutorial is still extremely helpful. You just don’t look at the “faces” part

Suicide, can the pictures be of a womans face? :) I'll do some of the body two when I get the time (ie. when I can be arsed)

Good drawing though suicide, my only real crit is the face, if you stuck a realistic face on there instead of a manga-styled one it'll look really good. In fact, I think it may have been CrazyHarij or someone who reccomended me some book, the Atlas of the Human Anatomy, probably the most useful art book I've ever seen, studies I do of humans now are so much better compared to the way I used to draw them. Give it a look Suicide if your interested - it's a great book :D

Yes- faces are allowed. The head is a part of the female body too, isn't it? ;)

Any yea, I suck at manga faces. A human anatomy would be great, I might try down my local library or something :)

The thing about me and manga at the moment is that I just can't stop watching anime. I bought Ghost in the shell recently, as well as the evangelion films, and I'm about to order Akira and Ninja scroll off amazon.co.uk, plus cowboy bebop when I've watched the series. I really want to buy the series collection for all the animes I watch... but they release 5 episodes on a DVD for £20... And I can't afford £100 for each anime series. hoepfully they will release the "perfect collection" DVD box sets here, like they did in america.

I got really screwed when the teacher saw me drawing manga chicks during class.......Don't do this in class kids!
You need to work on the face man,the nose and the eyes and the eyebrows,I can't give you any advice by typing but try to experment drawing the face differently.

Ok so since heads are allowed I'll post this in here too..

Quick sketch/painting of a very cute friend of mine ;) after she dyed the red stripes in, well it ended up taking around 2 hours cause I kept messing up the lips and then did something to the eyes and had to spend ages trying to fix my mistakes lol

screen - blurred
multiply - copy of background
background - original image

It doesn't normally end up like that, seemed to be an accident, im guessing it brought over extra data from painter that caused it, as it wouldn't normally ever look like that. So a happy accident.

I saw the earlier version (which was great), but that looks so much better now that you have added highlights and a background. The atmosphere is very gothic... It seems like this elite is prowling her territory, hanging around landmarks and gliding from street to street, seeking any troublemakers. I love the way that the horizon is slightly slanted... It adds a subtle disorientation, almost as if you are left confused and bewhildered by the surroundings, while the elite is completely impervious to this feeling as she knows the area like the back of her bio-modified hand.

I'm this close to buying you a tablet. You've obviously got talent and its obviously going to waste with you trying to use a mouse. ;(

Though saying that, the same image, painted traditionally in oils or acrylic would look bloody amazing. Luis Royo should paint a version of it :D:D:D

Well you clearly do have talent for it, your just spoiling it for yourself by trying to use a mouse. It's like painting with your feet when your hands work perfectly well. Get a decent tablet and you could be conceptart.org level in months. Stick with a mouse and you'll always be just shy of very good. I'm not saying the mouse is bad, for pixel work its fine, but for painting it just makes your life difficult.

So get one, even a cheap one works just fine. I dunno where you live but in the UK you can get them for like £25 they aren't the best but they work just fine IMO.

Just to say how geeky I am... I have allready purchased the normal version of WoW, but when I recently heard that there were a very small amount ofCollecters editions (http://img133.exs.cx/img133/9195/wow5ut.jpg) left I snapped one up quickly for £45 and It arrived this morning :D One of the main reasons I wanted it was because of the 200 page concept art book! look at their glossy pages!!!! Oh how I love my new concept art book, It will be such an inspiration when drawing undead rogues and *cough* worldofwarcraftporn.

But seriosuly guys, this thread was supposed to be limited posts so that it's easy to scroll through the pictures. The rules clearly stated that although posting comments and criticism is perfectly fine, spam and pointless discussions aren't. So please talk on topic Or I'll be forced to... Be really mean.

And just to put this a bit more on-topic... those of you who have done studies of humans or whatever, do you do them from a book or live? (please forgive a poor Art newbie over here for being so uninformed :'()

This is my sketch of a 24 year old woman. Please tell me if it looks alright. Thanks :hmph:

Druckles

It looks much too liney. By that I mean there isn't nearly enough shading, it is just lines...
This is quite noticable on the hair, but the dominence of lines means there is no room to fade between two items such as the hair does. Also, the hair lacks character, it is simply drawn on, and shaded in. Look in the mirror and tell me if yours does that. Shade instead, with the hair, downwards usually :p.
The face is also pretty ugly, but I guess you can't help it if your subject has a face like hell (apologies if she's a family member... i AM only joking...)

But apart from those, it looks quite good, and I can quite clearly see that it's a woman and see where everything is. Looking past the bad parts, that is a very good drawing (that seems a bit stupid to say doesn't it... but it does :p)

Keep working on it :D

little practice and confidence and I bet you could. Try it, sit down and start drawing things, start with simple stuff, just circles and squares and then cubes and spheres, lighting and shading and gradually move onto more complex things ,try to visualise them as simple shapes. You'll be drawing in no time.

*looks at shippi's drawing* ok now im jealous. It's always REALLY hard to draw folds.

Wanna know something REALLY funny though? I know the image you used as a reference, cause I found the same one and was going to do the same sketch LOL no shit, I picked it cause of the dress looking cool too. Sooooo weird. Well atleast I don't have to do one now yay! :D

Dude, sorry but thats automatically generated, its even picked up the slight differences in the original image where it would otherwise have been completely plain, around her head.. Looks like jpeg artifacts even. Why would you put in those if you did it by hand? :)

Just admit it was done with one of those sites (which have been around since the year dot also)

The name Edicius suits loads of things. That was the name of my level 26 paladin in the WoW beta ;) His holy smite would smite you so good you wouldn't be able to walk for a smiting week. Ah, being a a paladin brings back memories- you can use "smite" as many times as you want in one sentence :)

Working from a random photo I found on the net. Using my own custom brush from before and Round Camelhair. The unfinished parts sorta show how I do it, swapping back and forth for different effects, blocking then filling in then cleaning it up using both at light pressures to blend the colors together and kinda pull it around until I'm happy with it. Painter IX, since I still don't like the smear tool in Photoshop, Painter's has a more smudgy oil type effect and you can go from soft edges to hard smudging depending on pressure aswell as adding color, again depending on pressure. Only problem is Round Camelhair sucks if its larger than 25 unless lowering the feature setting, which ends up spoiling it. Which is why I made my own that works fine much larger (its also good for doing hair)

http://www.phantomworks.co.uk/tde/art/unfinishedsmall.jpg

Painter crashed and I just didn't feel like finishing it at that point. It was going to be for recording a script to show it being made but that was corrupted too, crashes if its run

since I still don't like the smear tool in Photoshop...etc.

Photoshop smear tool is your friend. photoshop smear tool is the man. (or woman). Photoshop smear tool kicks ass and chews bubblegum. photoshop smear tool is the guy who gave jesus a drink of pop when he was a bit knackered. photoshop smear tool is the buddy that dragged you napalm scorched and bleeding out of that no-win gook ambush in '68. photoshop smear tool is the pilot that climbed out of the window at 30,000 feet, crawled along the roof to the back of the 747, entered through a cargo hatch and blasted the hijackers away using an improvised 'plane safe' grenade made from hairspray, a polystyrene cup and a novelty sized bottle of perrier. photoshop smear tool is the nice old lady who left you the contents of her attic in her will which among other curios and charming objects contained excalibur, signed by arthur himself, in mint condition and still in it's original box. photoshop smear tool was the doctor who performed your tonsil operation and added an extra 7 inches onto your todger by mistake and then let you keep it anyway for the hell of it. photoshop smear tool was the only person that survived world war three in suspended animation because he sheltered under a door propped against a table covered with a mattress and cushions in his kitchen, to find upon emerging after 2 million years that the world had been inhabited by a race of dumb blonde future people who liked to make planets nice and flowery and walk around naked.

I'm not being mean. You want mean? I can do mean. Don't forget I used to have all sorts sending work to me to get a job. I've seen all kinds of things that pass as "art" and you couldn't be nice to all those people, was too much time and effort and it did them no favors.

Honestly, if you think I'm being mean. Go post that pic on one of the elitist art sites, and you'll realise I've been a puppy dog about it to spare most of your feelings while trying to get you to keep trying.

Here's an example of what you'll get on those places.. Don't expect any of them to consider your feelings, its business for them and to fluffle someone's ego out of pity isn't the done thing, it never helps nobody. These places regularly crit pro work like Craig Mullins or Syd Mead. So imagine what they'd do to yours, I wont even post on those places.

"wtf? LMAO"

"your taking the piss right?"

"I can't believe you even wasted your time doing that, let alone posted it"

"guys leave him alone, its not his fault he's a retard"

"dude, use a ****ing mirror! people don't look like that, on planet Earth"

"roflmao the eyes! the eyes!

"wow, and i thought I was bad" - from Graham aged 4 1/2

Do you see my point? If people lie and tell you it looks good when it doesn't, you'll eventually start believing it does, and then you'll start thinking your better than you are, and post where the bigger boys are.. and you'll end up never wanting to draw anything again. I know, I made that mistake when I started and I almost gave up for good when I was royally torn to pieces.

google for tutorials on drawing heads, either realistic kind or anime kind, practice and learn the methods and over time develop your own. You'll become instantly better I reckon after just a couple of hours. Infact I'd put money on it :)

And as I said, hmm twice before now. You can't really do one of these unless your a mod or have one in your pocket to keep it clean for you.

And lets face it, the actual number of posts fitting the subject of the thread is small anyway. You can't set off a thread like this and then not work on it all the time. Posting images yourself, tutorials, tips and hints, links etc.

I would contribute to this thread if I had more time at the moment, but any artwork I'm working on is generally for my art exam- we've recently started the preperation stages. After the research stage I'll be working on movement of the body and such, so I'm sure I could read up on a few tutorials and work on some agile female assasains or something. I would love to contribute to this thread more, I'm just caught between lots of work and playing WoW currently :/

And as I said, hmm twice before now. You can't really do one of these unless your a mod or have one in your pocket to keep it clean for you.

I like this idea a lot- somewhere that we can post drawings of character concepts. Plus the human body can be rather hard to draw, so it would be great for people to post any tutorials for dynamic poses, scale and proportion of the body, detail effects etc.

This is something that Sulkdodds pencilled during science, and I inked during English. oh yea we also did some of that... work... stuff....

Obviously the woman has been shot, and is being cradled by a mysterious man. I like to think that in her last few moments on this earth, the woman has finally realised what she has been living for; why she woke up in the morning, and what lulled her to speel at night. That thing was love- the love of another, their soft touch, their affectionate eyes and the knowledge that they will always love you. With these thoughts swirling round her head in her final moments, she realises that she doesn't need to cling on to the tatters of her life anymore- and with the warm sensation of enlightenment in her weary heart, she dies peacefully, no longer searching for a meaning in her life.

Sulkdodds, however, thinks that the emotional tears, subtle smile and outstretched hand are simply a random movements that occur when your brain is shutting down, and mean nothing more than a cluster of meaningless actions.

To be honest, I don't think you deserve the right to speak like that about this forum, and peoples pictures until you at least prove that you are an expert. Part of being an artist is knowing how to judge and comment contructively... 1st rule, don't judge yourself.

Also, if a picture isn't 'finished', don't bother posting. Well, not one like that anyway.

That reminds me, I'm going to start a new piccy soon, probably Elisha again :D :D AND i will try and get all my decent drawings scanned. It might mean I will have to create my own lil' showcase thread, if thats ok :naughty:

You know... i've always had a dream about being an arist, whether a digital artist, or a 3d modeler. However, I have long since come to the realization that I will never amount to anything in that field. I have creativity, but it is creativity with words, not with graphic artistic ability.

Sui

`Unreal- gather a portfolio of work (just some of your best images) and make a thread about it in the art forum, then simply update it every now and again when you've finished another piece of work. Like Cremator said, It'll probally get moved to the showcase section by a mod.

And about my image- I inked it as if I was inking a comic book, but I wouldn't call it "cartoony". Comic art is a respectable form of drawing that is just as matured as any other medium... Though I admit the picture's not that great :p

And Fleabaine; ignoring your comments on my/ your work, I've looked through your recent posts, and it seems that whenever you become engaged in an argument you simply insult the other member, sometime's very offensively. This is in clear violation of the forum rules (http://www.halflife2.net/index.php?page=rules)- you should try reading them sometime.

Druckles (At Fleabaine, angrily): I do not think that you stand to critisize any other persons work. Even though you may have the ability to comment, good or bad, there is absolutely no need to put anyone down, even if they are worse than you. In fact, if you believe you are better than someone, the only thing that you shouldn't do, is put them down. Putting them down is not going to get them anywhere else, it's just going to make them feel bad about something good they have done. If you want to do that, the only reason I could think why you would do that is to make sure they don't become, or realise, they are better than you. I think, as do most people here, that Suicide's work was great. However, I think that your work, along with your behaviour, needs improving. It's not finished right? Well finish it. Until you have, you cannot think, never mind say, that anyone else is better than you, unless you have that work to prove it.
[/rant]

Great work suicide. Don't believe you about the crying bit though :P

This forum has it's share of professional artists who are more qualified to be critics than anyone, including you Fleabrain. We may not find certain drawings particularly great either from time to time, but there is such a thing as tact and understanding and a desire to encourage better next time - being an arrogant ****tard doesn't make you a better artist than anybody any more than it makes you a critic. You're bad now, but with my help you could be the best. Seriously though, Art isn't all about having natural talent, it's all about knowing the techniques and shading etc which can drastically speed the learning process up. With some practise it can be easier than criticising The Dark Elf. and his work. LoL!!

I don't think the word 'owned' can be used more appropriately than to describe this post.

'Owned.'

Yes. Owned.

Like many of you have suggested, I'm going to make a character design thread soon, because I feel that will gather more entries, and this thread has kind of deteriorated into a tense arguing match.

Feel free to post any more pictures in this thread :) With the trolling and off-topic ness diverted to a newer thread, this one will be allowed to rest easily in it's retirement.

Sorry fleabaine but in my opinion and from what I've seen, you can't draw shit. There's NO sense of depth whatsoever in your images, and you list pretty words like "shading" even though it's completely absent in your own work.

Suicide42 however manages to show a sense of depth with only contour lines, and he does it in a good way in my opinion. He just needs some practise, but he's definitely much better than you. Sorry, but you said yourself you wanted the hard truth.

How bout you all just stop arguing and attacking other peoples work. Take that negative energy, and direct it to more art, and constructive criticism.

Holy crap. I just sounded like a hippy there for a second.

Can you stop with all this politics and criticism bullshit. And for everyone criticising Fleabaine's Iraqi girl picture, if i had done that, i would be very proud as it is much better then anything i could come up with. Fleabaine may be a little shit who likes shitting on other peoples work, but at least show him the courtesy you would want him to show you, and maybe we can get him on the straight and narrow.

So i will just reiterate what Unreal said, you should only criticise someone else's work if you can do better and you can better the other person by criticising it. And Dark Elf, like i said, if i had done that Iraqi girl picture, i would be very proud and the thought of my mum wetting herself laughing at it would make me give up art forever, so please watch such comments like that. I could understand it if Fleabaine had mocked people by drawing a stick figure with breasts, but not by the Iraqi girl drawing.

Good criticism is criticism that motivates the person to try harder.
Bad criticism is critcism that motivates the person to give up.

Let me put it this way. There is no shading just parts coloured black and scribbled in quickly. It wouldn't sell for even a dollar and none of you are art critics either!

I am the biggest art critic in town! And that's something, eh eh?

your taking the side of a troll. FYI

go search his other posts and see how he behaves around here with everyone, instead of giving him the satisfaction.

Oh and if you'd drawn that pic, you'd have got a better response because AFAIK you haven't used all 96 posts to insult, harrash, abuse, attack, belittle, flame, troll the forums and other users.

his is something that Sulkdodds pencilled during science, and I inked during English. oh yea we also did some of that... work...

Only thing I can notice about this pic, that strikes me as needing critique, is the fact that the arms appear very long from elbow to finger as he cradles her. Also, her thumb seems a bit small in proportion to the hand/other fingers.

Other than that, fantastic, I like it.

I don't think he was siding with the troll. I think he was just trying to convey that vicious attacks no matter the side, really don't work much to accomplish anything and will only lead to an increasingly downwards spiral of attacks and hate posts, which will make the mods lock the thread.

That is my point, if he is harrassing people, who will get warned, warned some more, and then banned. But the point i was trying to put across was people were not liking his art, not because it was really shit, but because of the comments he had made about others work.

edit: sorry to TheDarkElf, i wasn't trying to attack you or the others, i just thought that his work was getting criticised unfairly because he was a troll, not because of his artwork. And i could of definately put that point across a lot better in my original post.

Thanks :) The thing about me and Sulk's work is that we always have to do it in lessons that we aren't doing anything in, which means Sulk sketches it quickly, and I usually don't notice any proportional errors until after I've inked it. The same goes for the picture I posted in the new Character design thread.

And Razor- I know you're only trying to be nice, but it's not like Fleabais deserves anyone's sympathy.

Come on guys, this argument is pointless. Fleabaine, you're a mediocre artist at best. You've obviously got potential, but you're not there yet. You're in no position to put down other people's work like that. Even if you were the greatest artist ever known you shouldn't do that. How about instead of insulting, some constructive criticism?

TDE, yeah he's a troll. Still, don't judge his artwork on that. I can see why you've said what you have but don't sink down to his level. If he doesn't want to listen to advice, and prefers to go around thinking he is better than everyone, let him. In the long run he's only hurting himself.

Now can we please try get back on topic? I might post some more drawings later

I also didn't think it was as horrible and atrocious as everyone lashed out at him for, but it definately wasn't a masterpiece and didn't give him permission to bash other people's work (although nothing really does, but even more so because he was full of himself :P)

I think it is a style of shading a picture where you would draw lines to darken particular area, the more lines you put in, the darker the area.
