terrifying in what way? scary as hell or just terribly made?
If its the first hmmm. i dunno, Giger's stuff probably wins that one
Second kind.. well, i dunno hard to say, i've seen all kinds of concepts, some well drawn some just doodles but if they get the point across they work and certainly never have to look like a work of art, its just wasted time IMO.
But I once had someone send examples of work to us wanting a job and it was pretty much stick figure stuff, so i suppose that would be pretty bad heh.

Actually, stalkers and everything that they could have been are pretty close to the top of what I would call "terrifying." Having said that, I couldn't sleep for nights when I came across the insane children in American McGee's Alice. Although I can't find a link to pictures of them, you can see some of his work here. (http://www.americanmcgee.com/blosxom.cgi/home)
Basically, the kids were completely insane, doing things from acting like chickens to just staring into space to getting into this freaky "laugh as hard as they can-then-cry as hard as they can" mode that has just the most blood-curling sound effects you can imagine. To boot, the kids were all horribly experimented on, in that it appeared that some 18th century insane-asylum doctor attempted to "fix" them. The methods were all grossly bizzare, from "head clamps," to permenant brain "acupuncture" to removing the whole part of the head surrounding the brain and other parts of it. The worst part is that this reflects what happened in that era in real life... doctors performed horrible surgeries and treatments, turning people into these twisted half-humans, all thinking that what they were doing was actually helping the patients.
Something else that kinda freaked me out was part two of the "Second Renaissance" in the Animatrix. All of the experimenting on human brains and stuff... whew.
Anyway, in case you cannot tell, i am more or less freaked out by things done in the psychological realm, not really so much the physical. Like in DOOM, or any horror flick, really, all of the dead bodies mutilated in more ways than humans should know how... I don't really care... its only physical pain. But when you get to the point that you're messing with someone on the boundries between psychological and physical... that just gets me.

Are you being sarcastic? :p It was a valid question, especially on this forum when a number of mod teams have some really god awful concepts and some have really good ones.

I don't know... nothing has really freaked me out the same way they did. I've seen plenty of scary, disturbing movies, I've seen plenty of disturbing concepts... and yet, nothing has ever gotten me the same way they did. It's not that I am afraid OF them, its that I'm terrified that someone actually did that to them... would rather experiment with the unknown turning someone into a half-human than let them live and let live. Like, I think they all have smile-straps forcing them to smile... as though some real doctor actually thought that that would be a decent treatment.
Not the excorist nor any of Clive Barkers or any of that kind of stuff has ever had an impact on me... but those kids... whew.

See, now even that stuff doesn't creep me out at all. But I find it really cool, though.

Definately my favourite artist. But, Pai, I think you've been desensitised too much.

I don't know, I think its just different fears for different people. Some people just laugh and gloss over things that I'm afraid of, while apparently I'm not creeped out by the kinds of things that you are.
I've been looking at that guy's artwork a bit since I posted last... it fills me more with a sense of awe than anything... like looking at the intricate scenes in the Myst series for the first time. The more I look at them, the deeper they get... theres a sense of fascination and wonder about... and yet... a sense of silent sadness... I feel like there is an infinite world before me, but not one that I should fear. In some works, that I should pity. But in many of them its like I want to explore every facet of that world and learn as much about it as I can... its beautiful in that draws from the deepest, darkest parts of us that... not necessarilly bad parts, just parts we don't experience frequently.
Whereas when I see things like the more grisley concept art for the Stalkers or the kids in Alice, I just want to run and hide and shut it all out and never think of it again.
If I had to rationalize that... maybe it's because Bekinski's creations are creatures of darkness and dread... they naturally define what those words evoke... they are part of it and can never be anything else. But things like Stalkers have, or had, the potential to be perfectly beautiful, thinking, normal human beings but were twisted into what they are by unnatural methods... machines, heartlessness...
But that's all just my opinion... I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Beksinski's stuff is supposed to provoke silent sadness, because his work is representative of Soviet opression in Poland during the Cold War. Which is why everything looks like it's muffled, or silenced, and unable to talk.
This one's one of my favourite:

Gives a real feeling of being opressed, or something.

Oh yeah! That was good stuff! I can't believe that they are considered CHILDREN's books. I couldn't find any a real good Stephen Gammell site online, but this cover (http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0064401707/ref=sib_dp_pt/104-3786606-5460744#reader-link) will have to suffice.
It's very cool, and worthy of much more than a children's book. The very abstractness of his drawings, however, makes them poor concept art for anything game-related; they would be very hard to model and textures would be impossible has his work flourishes in black and white. The would make good movie or comic concepts, perhaps.

I had only just learned of him... and yet his artwork truly moved me.
Such a coincidence that I was first shown his work only days before he passed on.
And alot of paintings from Edvard Munch scare the crap out of me, for example the famous "scream"
