i just started getting the wierdest problem on hl2 where the crosshair is now a large 'Q' and the fonts on the main menu are different.
It says:
HALF-LIFE'
instead of the obvious HALF-LIFE2.
Also the health and ammo indicators are large, as if i am running a crap resolution, which i am not.
Any ideas, aside from reinstalling the game, cos i dont have time to wait for my 56k to download 25megs or so again, at least not on 20hrs of inet a month!

okay, i had this problem. its becos halflife's hud is stored in your windows font folder. now if u download a halflife2 font and put it in there it replaces it. you need to delete and halflife fonts out of ur font folder (should be c:/windows/fonts)
you should now be able to run halflife 2 and it will download the missing file it needs, if it doesn't, uninstall and install it again.

What you need to do is Navigate to this folder.......
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\you@somewhere.com\half-life 2\hl2\resource
add the 2 fonts to your windows font library, In C:\WINDOWS\Fonts
Or download an updated Crosshair here (link below) and replace the original fonts with this...Instead of the dots you get a thicker, easier to see Xhair..

That is one of the weirdest problems that multi people have had. Does anyone have an idea why the game does this?

ive heard its just a bug with the font files- i guess that isn't a very good explanation, but i haven't heard anything else about it

Just click here to verify hl2 files (steam://validate/220)
for future note, that doesn't work, cos halflife 2 has mixed the files up it still thinks that its okay. it doesn't recognise that the file is a different one with the same name.
