I'm a newbie at space imagery like this, but so far it's really fun, comments are appreciated. :)

I like it :D
I could definitely picture that being on the front cover of a sci-fi book- it's simple enough to be effective (I mean in the sense that you see everything you need to see without getting bogged down in detail).

Especially the writing.

Thanks! :D
I'm working more on experimenting with nebulae and more natural looking scenes.. I guess I'll upload if I come up with something decent.

(there was a better one but I couldn't find it)
Nice work anyway :)

Very Nice :)
A few suggestions:
-Needs more contrast: the star doesn't look as bright as a star should be
-Needs better textures: the planet and and nebula brushes need more variation
The planet also looks a little plain from where the beam is coming out. You could possibly add a city with lights and such around that area. Do this before sphereize (or whatever you do) the planet.
The sun's green glow doesn't look realistic. If a civilization was dying, a red giant type sun would work better.
Add more indicators of the planet dying. For all we know, the planet could be shooting a death ray at something. There could be a remnant of a space station nearby or a destroyed moon.
I hope this helps you improve on your space imagery. :D

Thanks a ton, I really appreciate the C&C :D I'll do my best to correct myself according to it :)

It's dying
And what exactly is that pole? It looks like a microphone altogether...

Actually, make a scene of some planet hitting down on Earth, causing a veeeeeery big explosion. That would be cool :D

What do you think Armegedon, Independence day, First Contact and all those films were about??

Its a great start.
You need more detail, and bigger explosions. And also, a shitload more colours. Adding a nebula would really add alot to the image.
