Dasparov
11-01-2005, 03:06 PM
what are the graphics of the games like?
lePobz
11-01-2005, 03:06 PM
Just Ridge Racers at the mo, my mate is goin to Hong Kong in a bit, he's gonna bring me back a heap of UMD games really cheap.
:D
The graphics are awesome, ridge racers looks almost like project gotham racing 2 on the xbox ... they've done an awesome job with it!
Dasparov
11-01-2005, 03:12 PM

I tried to take some myself of it in operation, but the games so fast it just comes out as a blur... the above link has pics of ridge racers in action though.

Christ, for a little box of tricks that's awesome! Looks better than N64 games, thats the sort of quality I was expecting

11-01-2005, 03:42 PM
Cool. But what's with the oversized box? What kind of peripherals does it come with? It looks damn sweet though :D
The PSP is like a small PS2 (both in size & kinda performace wise) so it's no wonder it looks better than the N64 or NDS.
Edit: I think this ought to be in the Games section too ;)

another questiong
you can do more whit that thing appart of play videogames?
like reproduce music?
lePobz
11-01-2005, 03:47 PM
It came with a case, strap, headphones (iPod style), in-line remote control (for video/mp3 playback), a 32mb memory card, charger (japanese), battery, manual (thats all in japanese)... thats about it I think.
Ridge racers and a british plug adapter for the charger also came with it (but not in the box, for obvious reasons).
I've added the PSP onto my wireless network, I'm gonna have a few net games of ridge racers soon, from my sofa :D
I hope Sony release a web browser & email client for the PSP, it would be so easy to do since it already has wireless access.
edit: yes RJMC, it also plays videos, mp3s, pictures, and acts as a secondary storage drive when plugged into a USB2 port (needs no drivers in XP)

well whatever the price is sure will be very expensive in my country
btw the games are on CD or DVD or a special format?
lePobz
11-01-2005, 03:57 PM
price will be about £150 when they retail here in the UK
the media is a special format known as UMD
http://www.game-machines.com/news/110703/umd.jpg
they hold 1.8gb (min) to 2.5gb (max)

lePobz, is the memory card Sony Memory Stick? I'm thinking of getting a PSP and if it does use MS, it'd work well with my Vaio...
lePobz
11-01-2005, 04:05 PM
it's not a memory stick, its a 'duo' ... unless a memory stick is a duo .... anyway, its like a small version of a SD card.

how in dollars is that?
and that UMD format disc are expensive?
lePobz
11-01-2005, 04:08 PM
the UMD discs come with games on them, they're not writable... so i'd say it depends on the game you buy :)
They probably aren't any more expnsive to produce than your average CD.

Duos are mini memory sticks, I have one in my phone (p800). They come with adapters to make them into normal sized memory sticks so you can stick them in your cameras or whatever.

Ah right I see, well yeah it has a duo port, and comes with a 32mb duo card.

Looks awesome pobz! I want one, i saw the new slimline ps2 which i wanted, but is a tad pointless. This thing looks even better, problem i feel is they want you to play your loved games portable, so i'd end up buying two different versions of a game. Making more money and me losing it :( No way we can use the original versions to convert onto the psp? what bit is it btw?

I hope Sony release a web browser & email client for the PSP, it would be so easy to do since it already has wireless access. They will. Saw it on a Swedish forum. Among lots of other cool stuff via Firmware updating.
-Text-to-speech
-Addition of support for SonicStage EMD and news transmissions (as in, RSS)
-Calculator
-Audio chat
-3 new games inside the PSP itself
-PSP mail software
-PSP word processor and spreadsheet
-PSP web browser
-PSP scheduling software
-Fix 00
-Fix 002
Dunno what the two last do though :) It's from some Japanese site. Some outside company has apparently managed to increase the battery capacity by 3x too :)

And this is kinda cool too.

DS meet your maker...i bet there will be a ton of good stuff to put in the PSP. A SNES\Genesis\N64?\Whatever Emulator for the PSP would be sweet....

Yeah get both a PSP & a DS. Play on your PSP until the battery runs out. Recharge while playing on your DS. Problems solved...

I want to import a psp but decided to hold off and hpefully some of the problems will be fixed when it comes to Canada.
Hopefully being the key word.

I was holding off buying one because i'd heard of the 'issues' ... but now i've got one and played around with it, I can't find the issues at all! ... i've forced the thing to try and get the UMD to eject without me pressing the eject button, but it just aint happening. Maybe some people got defective models.
I'm just waiting for the firmware update to give me web and email access, to make the thing perfect.
I'm not sure what differences there will be to the ones released in NA ... all I do know is that this one is Region 0 (plays everything from everywhere) ... maybe the american ones will be restricted.
The only problem I had with getting an imported is that I had to figure out how to change the default Japanese operating system into English ... not so easy if you don't understand japanese. Trial and error solved that one though :)

I asked my dad if it was okay if he imported one for my birthday on januart 25th and he said that it was fine but im still no sure because what will happen if I get a defective model. I cant warrenty it or something like that.
Oh and is the screen scratch resistant because I have heard somepeople say it is. (I dont want to to test it but just wondering if it says in the manual or something)
Oh and that doom screenshot looks wicked to bad you cant actually play that on the PSP because that would be a wicked game just to pull out on the bus after a rough day at school.
I got a friend who nows some japanese so changing the languages shouldnt be a problem, Oh and if I import a game also will I be able to change the language or will it only be in japanese? If its to much trouble I think I will wait till march

Well done to blackeye for pointing out that Doom3 is not actually playable on the PSP... although it does make an excellent pivture viewer / slideshow ;)
Hmmmm, I was going to order one a couple of days ago but pulled back. It would have cost me like £310 for the psp, memory card all the other stuff and 2 games, ridge racer and armored core. Do you really think I should spend this much? I have been iffy iffy all over the place and its doing my head in, after looking at yours I am like :O :O :O :O
Also LeProbz you don't even need to wait until your friend goes Hong Kong just go to:

Its the ultimate import website.

It would be so cool to play doom 3 on a handheld system that would do it justice. I wonder how many people you could trick into thinking you where playing doom 3 on the PSP if you played back a video
Wow I just found out you can by portable battery packs for the PSP if it ever runs out of batteries.

Scroll down to point number 22....
If you're talking about raw power, the PSP wins in that category. In fact, the PSP is argueably slightly more powerful than the PlayStation 2, which may seem shocking, but it is almost five years old. However, it does not look better than PS2 games, probably most likely due to the smaller LCD screen (compared to a regular TV with progressive scan) and other factors.
You should see the GT4 Mobile in-game video, the graphics are unbelievably awesome... although that's not released till Spring ;(
Ichi - thanks for the link .... and what are you waiting for, get one bought!!! You'll make everyone jealous :D
