View Full Version : Barney's "about that beer I owed ya" monologue is pure non-sense

Goethe

In HL: Blue Shift we play the Barney seen at the very beginning of HL knocking at a door. Now this Barney, which I suppose is the Barney we see in HL2, never told Gordon "catch me later, I will buy you a beer". True, it is possible that Barney told Gordon about the beer prior to the events of HL/ HL: Blue Shift, but since we don't know this the premise of the argument is non-sense.

If you walk up to a Barney in the first HL they will say "Catch me later I'll buy ya a beer."

Most of the security guards you talk to in half-life are barneys... ex. the one sitting at the desk when you enter black mesa is barney.

In HL, Barney is like Goofy in Disneyland: There's one every few feet.

The Barney in HL2 is a manifestation of all the barneys from hl1 combined into one supreme Super Barney.

Death Trap speaks the truth, they hadn't realised players would become so attatched to the Barneys and other npc's and and for HL2 they wanted to bring them back but obvioulsy there'd been about 50 so they made them all into one kind of uber barney, from which all other barneys were wrought, whihc means that he not only went through blue shift but also owes you a beer from what he says in the original half life 'anomolous materials' chapter (I think its in that bit where he does the eye scanner for you, to access the test chamber),

LMAO @ "the sum of all Barneys".

But really, I just take it as a tongue-in-cheek allusion to HL1, kind of like, "Let me do all the talking" or "Man of few words, aren't you?" and kind of assume that Barney met Gordon before the Resonance Cascade. It's too stupid to think all the Barneys are one guy as Barney Calhoun whom you played in Blue Shift is obviously the Barney in HL2, who never met Gordon during the game.

Barney knows he didnt owe Gordon a beer...but Gordon wouldn't know that. Barney just owes the beer on his brother's behalf, but couldn't be bothered to explain the concept of his cloning experiment to Gordon, so..."Yeah, I'm THE Barney"

The others were wiped out in a horrible accident. Also if Dr Kleiner doesn't give the Barneys hormone injections every 24 hours, they become female, then die.

Just some pointless theories

Opposing Force and Blue Shift are Gearbox Software's creation, so we shouldn't treat everything from these addons as part of the HL2 story. Blue Shift showed us, the players, that Barney and the scientists escaped from Black Mesa, that's about it.

What is the problem, when you get off the train at the beginning and Barney opens the first door, you press the use key and he says the phrase! Play it, don'y spray it :)

First: Play Hlaf-Life. (the first one)
Second: right in the beggining, press the "use" key to the first barney you see.

He will say "Catch me later, i'll buy you a beer." .

I cant even believe people question this, its a friggen game and its progresed to the point where they realised players got attached.

The Barneys in HL were never intended to be something people latched onto, but they did and thus they've fleshed out the idea of a Barney for HL2.

Maybe they're all called Barney Calhoun.

And Gordon could have met Barney before the incident.
He only had to talk to him 4 times at the most before "catch me later i'll buy you a beer.

maybe they resurrected barney from strands of his DNA found after he was massacred in HL1, and as for the many barney's in HL1, perhaps they were clones of the original Barney which were all made after barney promised to buy gordon a beer?

er...this is getting silly now isn't it

HELLO, everone, barney have known Freeman years before the Black Mesa thing, they have worked there for years, so barney could have sayd that before that day in Black Mesa. IDIOT!!

It makes perfect sense within the plot because Gordon could have known Barney before. And before you go "well how come all the Barneys say that" perhaps Gordon had a special relationship with a security team.

And obviously it makes sense outside the plot as a kind of homage.

yeah, but they didnt right the story!
i heard that the righter of blue shift and opposing force was the same as half-life 1, valve just let gearbox make the game (off the story line they wrote), becuase valve was bezzy makin half-life 2!

LOL -- even that's false, since some of the Barney's we meet in HL1 will say something like " You must be Freeman, right? " so not all of them knew him...

Maybe all the Barney's have a collective memory, and it is passed on to Barney in City 17.

Anyway, I noclipped off the tram in HL1 and bugged Barney until he said Catch me later i'll buy you a beer.
So at least I didn't get any storyline inconsistencies, my HL experience is untarnished :P

duckmoose

Okay, just assume Gordon met Barney before Half-Life 1. And instead of assuming the plot has some stupid "sum of all Barneys" thing, just take it as tongue-in-cheek as well, like the "just like old times." Or you could take that to be a reference to lots of things other than the idea that they fought side-by-side. Use some imagination, sheesh.

Revenge
31-12-2004, 12:32 AM
Well it's the only theory that actually fits!

In Blueshift you are a Barney. Not the Barney. In HL2 we meet the one Barney to rule them all, and all is well.

Valve didn't really know what they were getting themselves into for HL1, now they do. I'd seriously suggest considering HL2 and the real starting point for the half-life universe story line, and everything before it as just preamble or something...

moggy
31-12-2004, 01:06 AM
in hl1 they were all barneys.
because of the characters popularity among fans valve later allowed the add-on blueshift to embrace the character in its own way and as the story has flexibley developed into hl2 we see that one main barney character return in its own fully unique way as a single character.

in blue shift u play "the Barney" "Barney Calhoun" who is the main barney taken from hl. and this barney calhoun as we now know him is the barney taken into hl2. for us older fans he is the epitome of all the original barneys and is that great character emboldened in tis own right and we all love him as th familiar friendly face and voice he is.

duckmoose
31-12-2004, 02:00 AM
His face is different and so is his voice. :smoking:

But I still think my theory is more practical.

So therefore it has to be 100% correct.

And it is.

You are all damn wrong. In HL, there is a secret passageway in one of the maps, I forget which, where you travel down a long corridor leading to a door. This door has a sign on it written in a strange language. You open the door and walk into a dimly lit room where there is a group of Barneys surrounding a burning HEV suit. No words are spoken, but they all look at you with those beady eyes. After a few uncomfortable moments, they all begin chanting in monotone unison, "Catch me later, I'll buy you a beer...catch me later I'll buy you a beer..." Their eyes begin to glow red and they all suddenly warp to a destination unknown.

So you see, all Barneys in HL are simply clones programmed by the Combine to provide a false sense of companionship. But in fact, they are spy drones used to gather information about you.
