I can't install Half Life 2, I've had a number of problems

When I first tried to install the full version of the regular Half Life 2 package, I got to the fourth disc and the came up:

"Error 1305. Error reading from file: C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\counter-strike source shared content.gcf varify that the file exists so you can ccess it."

After clicking retry it attempts installing this part again until the same error appears again.

I tried resetting and trying again with no success. Then I tried installing just Half Life 2 without Counter Strike: Source and this error came up:

"Error 1334. The file "hl2.ico1" cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in the cabinetfile 'hl24.cab'. This could indicate a network error, an error reading reading from the CD-rom or a problem with this package."

I tried doing this on both my DVD and CD-rom drives and the same errors came up! Why? If my disc is faulty or something, I don't even know if I can return it so can you help me out so I can fix it? Will the patch do anything - will it even work without Half Life 2 installed?

I thought I'd post this here, perhaps somebody has heard/had this problem and knows how to fix it?

This is a very common problem. The solution according to Valve is supposedly to make sure you do a full installation that includes Counterstrike: Source.

Valve's advice (http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=273&p_created=1100677585&p_sid=*4PHSQth&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPXNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMT0mcF9jYXRfbHZsMT0mc F9jYXRfbHZsMj0mcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1pY28x&p_li=) is to let Steam update first, then install with CS:S.
