Ive been searching through some of the files hosted on half-life2 files, but all of them seemed to be really low in quality.

Has any of you looked through the 50 map mappacks, and discovered good mp maps? Screenshots if you have any are welcome! :)

Cheers!

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking... are you asking for a good custom made map? A very well done is 'dm_zen-sahare'... it's a remake of the Golden Eye level Aztec. Or something like that.

both of those are great, there's several threads on the steam forums with some of the higher quality maps as well.

Dockside is the best community made map so far imo.

Argonaut
12-12-2004, 09:21 PM
yeah i found it browsing the steam forum, which has been suggested before. i also tried the xen sahara map, but its pretty mediocre.

dockside seems to be pretty good, but still has some glitches.

its really hard to find good dm maps :borg:

You can thank the n00bs who download Hammer and spend 10 minutes making a box with some weapons in it and then release it as if it was a finished map.

Yea, I like that one too, except I don't understand the meaning of locking that gate. For what purpose?

Long like HLDM crossfire ;(

In crossfire, the reason the gate closes is so that everyone inside will be sheilded from the nuke that goes off when someone tries to open the door.

Well of course i'm gonna recommend my own maps.

Download Temple2 if you like an arena with lots of high-up cover and canyon fodder to shoot. Download Skyhigh if you want to do alot of sniping as well as gung-ho stuff with the only cover being item-stocked cubbies (and of course if you like blasting ppl off the edge into the clouds below).

Neither map, i will admit, is very high in polygons, but each is fun to play. And, thats what matters. 56k friendly, thats for sure.

Let it be known, I'm working on some new maps, which beat down these maps with a lab book.

dm_powersurgebeta*(Not sure what the latest version is) is an excellent map. Lots of distance work, though, so the crossbow, mag, and rpg are hot weapons to grab.

Xen_sahara, in my experience, is extremely buggy. If you step on one particular spot, you automatically die. And the last time I played, I got a weird glitch halfway through that drained my suit energy instead of adding to it. Needless to say, I was pissed, and I left pretty quick. I'm pretty certain that it was the map, because I've never had that problem anywhere else.

DoctorGordon, if you stuck an env_light in temple2 it would look infintely better. I've played it quite a bit and it's great, but it needs lighting desperately.

Glad you're enjoying it. Advanced lighting and more, in Temple3.

Could be awhile before i release that though; Im working on 5 new maps right now.

Quality over quantity, DoctorGordon.

As for the remake of Crossfire2. Recently the server I play on switched to b2 of that map, and I have to say, I like b1 better in some ways. For 1, having to run to the bunker whenever someone presses the button isn't actually that fun. Also they incrased the number of i-rifle guns and orbs in the map quite a lot, so now it's very frequent to have one or two going off, which kinda sucks IMO.

I don't particularly like the texture job they did, and they didn't really add anything new at all (which is both good and bad), but it's still a good map to play on (a few more spawn points would help it out though).

I'd like to see a remake of Doublecross though, which was inspired by crossfire2 and IMO quite a lot more fun, although not sure how well it'd do without the gluon gun in it.

Quality over quantity, DoctorGordon.

I assure you, each map i'm working on now is 5-star. See, i have a uhh....consultant helping, so the work is divided.

Also, these maps each have custom textures by myself.

Yes, i've carefully read the rules. I'll release a special version of the map i plan to enter with my textures, then release the normal version, which will use the junky textures that come with hl2.

If you eliminate all the maps that are beta, you get maybe 5, and maybe 2 good one out of the 5.

DoctorGordon3
13-12-2004, 10:37 PM
Time does not directly equal quality. Heck, someone could make a map in 45 minutes, and it could turn out to be the best map ever made, simply because its fun to play.

Stop using the time variable as your quality measure.

i dont want this to turn into a flamethread - i still havent found any maps equal to those 2 shipping with the regular DM.

there are some good ones, but most of 'em are just... well crap.

this is just my opinion: in the year of 2004, where games like HL2, doom3 and far cry hit the shleves, i think, a mapper, who wants to really draw attention on his creations has to look on both: playability, and not less important, the visual perfection.

a good map actually needs more than a few hours to be created. it needs to be playtested and all that architecture work needs time, i think, everyone can agree on that.

sure you can throw out maps which are not visually stunning and still be fun. hell, you can even have fun in a box filled with weapons if you want.

the true mapping genius proves himself in equal good looks and gameplay.

well, the DM mode has just been out, so i guess, its a long time till the first really good maps are out. look at ut2004. its available THAT long and still most of the maps are crap.

ive looked at dockside, xen-sahara and bounce so far, and dockside seems to be on a good road. i dont like xen-sahare, its too trivial in design to actually make good and long fun for me. about bounce, well havent tested it that much, but seems to be really small, and best fit for 1 on 1.

thats just my opinion - of course you dont have to agree with it.

doc, havent tested any maps of you so far, but im looking forward to your high quality maps!

I don't think it matters how many crap maps come out, so long as people ignore them. Taking UT2004 as an example, some of the community made content exceeds the stuff in retail, which is amazing considering how good some of the retail maps are. For every 10 "CTF-AndAction" remakes, there is at least a brilliant map that makes you sit up and take notice. I'd say that UT's "good custom map" inventory is about 300 or so maps large. That's damned big enough, even if there are 15,000 horsecrap maps out there :)

Heck, someone could make a map in 45 minutes, and it could turn out to be the best map ever made, simply because its fun to play.
I'll believe that when I see it: it's never been done and it never will be done.

The 45 minute-map was an example...probably not realistic, but still....never have a lack of confidence.

My point is, when you see a map thats been built in under a day/week/however long, don’t bash people who potentially worked quickly and efficiently to deliver a quality map.

I sure don't want to bash any actual maps till I have played them at least a little. If someone posts a map on here and I don't like it for whatever reason I will just keep that to myself. People are just trying their best. I know I could never make a map anyone would want to play.

The only reason I attacked killbox is because I have played the hldm version of that map and I get tired of it fast. :D

I'm not very likely to praise conversion maps. Not very original. You would think that after playing a map for 6 years people whould be ready for something new.

gasworks:s is not new, I don't care how many cool textures someone adds.

In the past couple days I've been joining servers playing maps I've never heard before just to check out whats out there. Here's a couple tips to the mappers:

1) Throw some lights in there! I know looks aren't as important as playability but damn, some of these are just ugly. Even if just a couple of lights were thrown in it would be much better.

2) Take some time and create a realistic environment. The physics in this game are incredible yet so many of these new maps aren't making use of them at all. Where's all the debris? We need to make use of this gravity gun. This is the best part of the two valve maps: they are completely loaded with objects. When I play on these maps I don't even use any guns just because I don't have to!
