i got to the part where you meet your first big monster

Is it a boss? If you don't know how to defeat him, first, you'll notice that you cannot attack it from the front, you'll have to go behind him and slash his heel. Then, he'll eventually fall to one knee, climb up onto him by pressing foward+jump at his foot that sticks out at you. Then, slash the back of his head. The monster will try to grab you and throw you away, he'll give some sort of cue to let you know that he'll be trying to get you off, press left or right to move away.
Rolling dodges really help with this boss.
I hope this solves your problem. I'm not sure if you're talking about the Thrall/Brute, you should be more specific. And don't go to the official Prince of Persia: Warrior Within forum, those people suck. Except for me.

them baddies are annoying as hell. once I'm on them I cant figure out how to get off them, so I always end up being thrown off. The best piece of advice I can give to kill one though is slash its heels as Prince of China said and then when it falls climb up and press (xbox) left click quickly to go into bullet time mode (or whatever it's called) and you can get many more slashes in than you would normally.
