alot of these threads have popped up at diferrent forums so i thought i'd start 1.2004 was a great year for gaming, maybe the best ever so heres my list for my games of 2004,you dont have to include every game you got this year or games that were released this year just what was a real highlight, also include disappointments if you like, spoilers too if you like and games you still hope to get this year neway ill start:

no particular order:

Mafia :yes released over 2 years ago but i only got it this year in a 2 for 50 euro deal(got maxpayne2 also),what a game, wonderful narrative that hooked you in from the moment you began, reeked of atmosphere and style, evolving characters, wonderful and sad ending, brill music and its a illusion software game

Thief 3 :while it disappointed many fans it still proved a very worthy sequel with another great story, the city hub coulda been better but added charm too, tweaking improved the gameplay, lvls like the cradle and overlook were experiences in themselves.

Far Cry :where'd this come from, completely stole the thunder from hl2 and doom3 by beating them all to the posts, best graphics ever imo :dozey: ,some of the biggest lvls in fps history and no bloody loadzones either, story and trigens sucked but non-linear environments and a new setting for fps made it excell.

Half-life2 duh?didnt have to live up to nething 4 me as i nvr played hl1  brilliant gp,graphics, atmosphere etc steam spoiled the whole thing somewhat and poor performance on my very capable sys but the ,how do i say, story progression was wonderful, atmospheric beginning then thrown into a mini civil war with wonderful lvl design, nuff said

Call of duty/uo :gr8 mp made up for the somewhat too inbelievable sp(chateau ne1? :sniper: ),the thing that makes it for me is the sound, nothing compares to the violent, loud sounds in this, best explosions, smoke effects in the biz, again gr8 mp,domination in particular.

Max payne 2 my 1st experience of havok in action was truly memorable, way too short but wonderfully designed and bt2 owned all,the best'cinematic'gameplay yet.the paranoia lvls were artistically impressive for a game.

Pro Evo 4 :best footie game evr, nuff said.

disappointments:
doom
steam
hitman:ct(terrible cashin)
sc2:pt(dido)

looking forward too:mgs3,v:bloodlines,
nxt year:stalker,fear,pariah,brothers in arms,battlefield 2

I don't really know... I don't even remember all the games I've played. If I don't like a game, I trade it for another one. That happens A LOT. I've played so many games this year alone that I can't remember a fraction of them.

There's been no groundbreaking releases this year, I think.

Half-Life 2: No Duh.
Theif: Deadly Shadows: Love it, amazing game.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: AWESOME GAME, right beneath HL2.

Hmmm...what else? Beyond Good & Evil came out last year, right?

Yah, nothing much else.

And I'm getting POP: Warrior Within, so I will see how that is. The demo was amazing.

And by the way, FarCry was released in 2003, so it doesn't count

Far Cry - Amazing game in nearly every aspect, especially considering I had never heard of it until the demo was released.

HL2 - Best game I've ever played.

GTA: San Andreas - So fun, possibly game of the year for consoles, or at least, PS2. It definetly tied me over until HL2, and then some.

Doom 3 - Scared the hell out of me, but no replay value..

Burnout 3 - Possibly best racing game I've ever played.

That's all I can think of right now...

This year was about two games and two games alone for me: Half-Life 2 (well duh) and UT2004. I'd say they're my "Games of the year"; Half-Life 2 was this years best Single Player exerience, UT2004 this year's best Multiplayer experience. In fact, both are probably the best examples of SP/MP FPS games i've ever played.

Though of course, thats 100% my opinion. AND My opinion really does suck on the basis that, if I think about it I only bought 5 games this year: HL2, UT2004, Doom 3 (good enough I suppose...) Deus Ex 2 (yes 2004, i'm European. And it sucked a big one.) and Threads of Fate (ebay! At least it was cute ^^). What's more, all those games had to contend with me playing the graphically superior System Shock 1 in February of this year.

You spend £500 on upgrading your PC, and the next game you complete was made in 1994. All hail Lady SHODAN!

So in summary: my opinion counts for nothing. But ssshhh!

Game of the Year
1) World of Warcraft - This is how a game is supposed to be made. Easily the best game of the year, if not the decade. Does everything right.

Honorable Mentions
2) Doom 3 - Amazing atmosphere, graphics, and effective method of telling the storyline. Suffers from repetition.
3) HL2 - Good game, just has some miserable failings. Also overhyped by Valve.

Disappointing
1) Battlefied Vietnam - How you should not do a game.

Meh...
1) Unreal Tournament 2004 - The formula is getting a tad stale.
2) Far Cry - An average shooter in most respects

Halo 2 (Still play)
HL2 (Haven't played a 3rd time)
MGS3 (Beat and playing again)
Doom 3 (Wishing I could sell)

Also to mention:

WoW Stress Test - I wish I had the time and money to play this one right now. I had fun in the stress test

WC3 - I'm still playing this one. Not the normal game mind you...the custom games. DOTA's rule.

Spartan, I thought your name referred to Master Chief in the Halo games. It doesn't?

Halo 2, Half Life 2, Doom 3, World of Warcraft, City of Heroes. Good games, the lot of them.

Spartan, I thought your name referred to Master Chief in the Halo games. It doesn't?

Nope.

1 : a native or inhabitant of ancient Sparta
2 : a person of great courage and self-discipline

1 : of or relating to Sparta in ancient Greece
2 a often not capitalized : marked by strict self-discipline or self-denial <a Spartan athlete> b often not capitalized : marked by simplicity, frugality, or avoidance of luxury and comfort <a Spartan room> c : LACONIC d : undaunted by pain or danger

Anyway, I took it from a movie of the same name.

I dunno. All the games i've played this year have just been the same.

Far Cry was ok. The first few levels were great, then afterwards it got boring.

HL2 was/is great but i can't play it through again for a 3rd time, just not challenging anymore.

Halo 2 was a big disappointment, SP was all the same, too easy and incredibly short. MP was great but nothing better then UT 2004.

Doom 3 was crap.

UT 2004 was awesome, but i never play MP games for long.

Fable didn't even feel like an RPG but more of an adventure game.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Freedom Fighters, The Longest Journey and Thief 3 were the best games of the year with HL2 for me. Even though 3 of them came out before 2004, i only got to play them this year.

I think i'm just kinda over First Person Shooters. They're all the same now. Bring back adventure games damnit!!!!

I'll look into World of Warcraft but isn't it a monthly fee?

Halo 2, little to no single player fun, tons of multiplayer fun

HL2, a great game, short single player although it never gets linear

UT2004 was fun, Red Orchestra was the only reason I bought it

KoTOR was fun, except I got my guy to Malak and had to take the rental back

Doom 3, pure, over-hyped, shite

THUG 2, taking what little respect skateboarding had left and turning it into some dick jokes w/ bad music.

Half-Life 2 - I loved everything about it

Legacy of Kain : Defiance - OMFG RAZIEL HAS BEEN IMPRISONED IN THE REAVER!! I love the world and the stories of these games, fantastic stuff.

Knights of the old Republic - Just a great epic game.

In no particular order:

PES4 - best sports game ever \o/

Halo 2 - single player, co-op and multiplayer all rock .... will last ages.

Rome: Total War - one of the best RTS games i've played.

HL2 - looks sweet, cool physics :)

Zerimski
06-12-2004, 03:00 PM
HL2, obviously.

Burnout 3 - I rented Burnout 2 when it came out thinking it would suck. I was wrong. The third game takes everything that made the second great, and improved on it immeasurably. The only small quible I have is the questionable soundtrack, the cheesy guitar riffs of the second game somehow added to the excitement.

Rome: Total War - The first in the Total War series to actually enthrall me in the overall strategy of conquering regions as well as the superb battles. Incredibly immersive, and brilliantly brutal.

GTA:SA - Bigger, and better than ever before. The sheer scale of this game alone would put it in the top games of this year, but add to that the depth and you get another classic.

Football Manager 2005 - I don't usually go for sports titles at all, but I haven't seen one of my housemates for about 2 months because of this game, so I decided to give it a try. I was surprised at how easy it was to play considering I have little to no knowledge of the current state of the beautiful game. It'll appeal to the competitive edge in anybody who plays it, and keep you gripped.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - The Warhammer universe has always, always screamed out for a quality RTS title but has sadly always disappointed. This game changes all that. Some people may find this to be a pretty standard RTS, but there is a lot more depth than originally apparent and it looks bloody great. Oh, and it's very, very bloody at that.

I'm currently playing Sid Meier's Pirates!, which like all of his games has a quiet, subtle addictiveness to it that is keeping me going back. Some of the mini-games are samey and repetitive but it's so charming and engaging that it doesn't matter very much.

linky (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69578) I don't know if that's of any help... It took a lot of patience to get the damned thing working, and then I could only manage full 320x240 O-Vision. I'd say it was completely worth it of course...
