HL2 DM not starting?

It goes to the "Prepairing" after you double click HL2 DM. But it just never opens...the dialog box disappears...but hl2dm never shows up in Task Manager or anything, tried restarting steam...anyone else?

pple need patience.
do u realize how many pple are currently restarting their Steam so they can get the update? the content servers are busy handling all the updating and so its only natural that the available games are temporarily down.

i want to play it too...but i know its best to just go to bed so i can get up for work in the morning.. oh well.

It said that HL2 isn't up to date...i'm validating my files now and see if that'll work.

I dont think theyre doing too bad for the first real online content delivery system. I think it was pretty great how I was able to activate HalfLife 2 the moment it came out.

you need to authenticate before you play any hl2 offline. wait a few minutes or a couple of hours for the network calmdown. lots of traffic going on.

I was playing HL2 at the strider level and then I got a memory error (first time ever with HL2). I kinda panicked because I heard all these other people get memory errors and they couldn't continue. But to my surprise when I restarted HL2 it UPDATED and then I continued to play it. This was around 12am eastern time. Then I find out that the DM has been released which says 8:05pm on Steam site. I reckon that is pacific time so that is around when I experienced the crash. So I guess the game got an error because it wanted to update itself? Oh I also played HL2 online.

Anyways how does this relate to the DM? Well I haven't downloaded it yet because of ppl saying HL2 won't work. But did you guys (whose source games won't work)...did your HL2 update when you try to start it?

i think some of u guys need to realize that just cuz its his first post doesn't mean he just got his first computer. he has a point, u can post and whine, which no one wants to read or u can give some constructive converstation, like possible problems, things to do to fix it or just wait. ask ur self, would u want to read a post of someone saying "this blows, valve sucks and so does steam, i just totally wasted my whole evening on this" if u can't get it to work simply say what's errors your getting, stuff that can progress us all.

I forgot to mention, i did get this messege where it said, hl2 hasnt been updated please run to update, but when i ran hl2 nothing happened. this is after steam downloaded and installed update as i watched it do it which was very fast 550/sec i was amazed cause i never went higher than 300k/sec when i downloaded files in the past.

At least this time i dont think its to do with the retail disk not starting properly! (seemed to have probs validateing key in time when hl2 first came out), because i can here the disk start up to play every time i try hl2dm!

I am very disappointed.... I was hoping they got this fixed atleast by 3am, that would have gave them a whopping 7 hours to figure out what the problem was, but now it looks like it won't be fixed untill probably today in the afternoon or late today, but who knows... I really wanted to try out DM, even worse none of the Source games work... so now I will have to wait until midnight tomorrow to play anything cause i have class, and work all day until midnight... awesome...

It's brilliant. Release a giant new component at the end of the workday and then go home. To all the people saying just be patient and wait til tomorrow, I say **** that. I want to play the game I paid for and by all rights should work. This is going to happen everytime Valve releases something new. Eventually one of two things will happen: either Steam will die and we won't have to put up with this crap anymore or Valve will just stop patching and offering upgrades.
