The file is in \Steam\SteamApps\[your nickname]\half-life 2\bin
At the top it is written "DO NOT EDIT!!" so I guess you edit it at your own risk.

This thread may be of interest to dx7 GPU owners but I think ppl with better GPU's may also find the settings interesting.

As you may remember I wanted to know how to stop objects in HL2 from fading away when you are not close to them. I found out that you can change it in dxsupport.cfg. I changed these lines in the dx7 settings (find the line "name" "70" and then the below lines underneath it, as there are settings for all dx's make sure you edit the right settings):

"ConVar.r_screenfademinsize" "200"
"ConVar.r_screenfademaxsize" "300"
//these are responsible for props of certain size fading away
//changed them both to "0" so none fade away

"ConVar.cl_detaildist" "0"
"ConVar.cl_detailfade" "0"
//these are responsible for making objects less detailed
//at a distance; they were set to "0" as on dx7 the objects
//fade away before they can lose their detail; changed
//1st to "1200" and 2nd to "400" as for dx8 GPU's

What's more I changed

"ConVar.r_drawmodeldecals" "0"
//changed to "1" so I can have decals on models (such as blood)
//what is for dx7 GPU's turned off; they look nice except for
//white paint, but I guess it lacks some shading which is now
//a hardware problem for my gf4mx440 and can't be changed

I don't know why shouldn't we edit this file as it is said on top of it, but as for now my GPU still hasn't burst into flames and I can enjoy all the objects visible on the screen and model decals without any big (if any) performance drop. I have a 2,8Ghz Pentium so if you have a processor like 1,5Ghz you may experience a performance drop though.

I think Valve should let us edit these things without messing around with the cfg files, but from the options menu in-game (in a highly-advanced menu maybe :]; as they call changing the details an advanced option). To who should I write from Valve about this? Could anyone provide me with an email?

So, anyone played with the settings? It seems that some memory tweaking is possible. Lol, let's turn on dx5 support :)

dx5 support is like torture.... Most things revert to just a color.

Turning that fade distance up would be nice, because on a dx7 card it is really short.

You should copy the original file before editting. You may be sorry later otherwise. (Although I suppose with steam, you could just delete it and get the original back?)

Thanks a ton for finding where the prop fade distance variable was! I've been pulling my hair out trying to get the props to not fade! Now HL2 looks amazing.

I tried copying all the setting for the dx9 to the dx7, but still no luck with the damb water effect...
Well a good video card is only $40...

Thanks for pointing this file out, currentlly I am doing a bit tweaking there and there with it....

Hehe. I'm happy that my dx9 gpu has all these on.

But I found some other options i'm gonna make changes too. Like decal cullsize and such. I usually just slam the edited cvars inot config.cfg but this makes it feel more "professional".

Hehe.

This is roughly on topic...

Does anyone know why at the edges of the water, there are no waves or anything, the water looks great but its just the edges look weird.

I noticed this too. It's the way valve coded the water. There are not physics in the water.

It's a shame too, since you see water soo much.

Tell me, in what game(actual thats out) has water physics?
none ;). Yes valve could have included water physics, but they wanted people to be able to run it.

I'm not talking about physically stimulated waves, I just mean like a sprite or animation at the edges.

The things in the water use the physics, not the water it self.

Back when I still had an Intel Integrated graphics card, the props would disapear as I was standing on them....
