stuck in 2nd level

hell.my 1st post here,lots of info on everything hl2.very nice
i am an ultimate noob to this game,and i am stuck already
after walking thru the 1st level,i am in the apartment block,where the bad guys are knocking down doors.i go up a floor and a guy says to come here-they then yell they are coming and he says get to the roof.i run to the darkened stairwell,and there is a chesterfield,a frezzer and a chair blocking my way,i try to lift it out of the way-no go.i tri to jump on top and over the pile-still cant.i think i m in the right area but need to get over the damn stuff blocking the stairwell.any help appreciated for this rank noob

look around abit more, you should see another door to go down... dont panic, there isnt a set amount of time before the combines get you (i think)... so have a good look around.

wow,thnx for replies.usually i see in many forums a noob like me
get slammed for asking a ?.old age you say to check for another door to go down,the guy yells out specifically-get to the roof or something like that.ill go back and take a screenshot if i cant figure it out
