Unanswered questions

I know theres so many that are asking the same questions, but I'd like to ask my main ones and see if there are answers or if they are supposed to be left a mystery. I finished the game and these are the questions I was left with. Thanks to anyone who answers :D

1) What was the big machine I destroyed at the end (that exploded)?

2) Who are the combine and where are they from?

3) Where has freeman been in the past 10 years (or whatever)?

4) What is Gman's involvement in the story?

5) What were the combine's ultimate goal?

6) It seems Gman has the ability to control so much... even time itself perhaps? What the hell?

What I want to know are who the fek are those skinny peg-leg guys inside the citadel?

I think the skinny peg-leg guys are a stage up from humans ( or down), they are workers, the next step is probably combine.
