plasma gun secondary ammo?

ive had the plasma rifle gun for quite some time but ive not found any secondary ammo at all. when i right click for secondary fire... nothing happens.

the gun looks like the 1 from the bink vid where it was shooting out that funky plasma beam shot which made enemies die in sort of bullet time.. in the bink with the roller mines.

am i missing something??
